Of course, Ginny Coppola was ALSO Barbara Hyland's aide, and provided excellent constituent service to the District - that was part of what made Mike so successful and unopposed.

<

p>
Her hard work may have been just as big a factor as her widowhood.

Yup, I noted that Coppola had been an aide to Hyland when I first wrote about this special election (before Naughton had entered the race). Both candidates have been very actively involved in the community for many years, and both worked very hard. And a lot of people seem to have voted based on personal connections, from what I saw and heard.

<

p>
It makes sense that her work with Hyland would have helped her husband get and the state rep seat when Hyland departed. But I'm very skeptical that it had much to do, directly, with yesterday's vote. Obviously, the biggest factors were the political leanings of the district's voters, and the campaigns the two candidates ran. I believe Coppola's use of the widow factor as a main campaign message was very effective. If she tried to use her history as an aide to Hyland in the 90s as a significant part of her campaign, I missed it. Nor did I ever encounter a voter (while phonebanking or canvassing) who mentioned anything related to it.

so Naughton has a chance to win the seat. I hope if she does, you won't find a reason why her opponent should have won the way you tried to make her opponent's win last time seem more inoccuous than it was...
