An Update.
I posted previously that the Board of Selectmen in Mansfield had changed the name of one of the town streets to Ronald Reagan Way.
The Board of Selectmen in Mansfield voted last night 3-0 to reverse their earlier decision to change the name of one of the streets from Giles Place to Ronald Reagan Way. This was in response to letters from Democrats in town (see below) and appeals from the Giles family who’d been blindsided by the name change. (The Giles family gave the land the street is on to the town decades ago).
The good guys won! I didn’t see the BOS meeting but I’m told they were sheepish and chagrined and they quietly voted to reverse themselves without any discussion. Thanks to all the bloggers who helped publicize the controversy and congrats to the Giles family to whom this issue was more than just a political fight. www.neopolity.blogspot.com

Do you think Lincoln got a hummer in the Oval Office?

Oh yeah, by the way Reagan was a terrible president. Single handed won the cold war which allowed countries like Poland, Hungary, and all those other eastern European countries and hundreds of millions of people to enjoy the privileges that we enjoy in a democracy. Ronald Reagan truly their hero. I suggest you go read a history book someday instead of defining everything you see though the prism of a crazed liberal. A lot of conservatives do good things in a lot of ways. Oprah is not your salvation.

I liked Reagan when, as governor of California, he cut funding for mental health institutions and ended up kicking thousands of mentally handicapped people onto the streets. There’s a compassionate conservative for you.

You know, if I lived near a Lincoln street and a city or town council voted to change it to Clinton Street without public discussion, I’d be quite annoyed.

The Soviet Union bankrupted itself without Reagan’s help.

If he “won” the cold war I’m Bill Gates.

You ever been to an Eastern European country? They don’t have Reagan worship there…

Are we talking about the same Reagan who didn’t allow for HIV/AIDS research and whose conduct brought forth the AIDS epidemic and infected thousands of people through tainted blood transfusions?

Are we talking about the same Reagan whose administration sold weapons to Iran and used the proceeds to pay off Nicaraguan gorillas who massacred their political opponents?

Oh sorry, I read those in a history book…

Take your namecalling elsewhere…

Star Wars missile defense system to think about. He squeezed inflation out of the economy with Paul Volker as Chairman of the Fed. He gave Americans a sense of dignity after our spanking by the Iranians . But the point here is that every president in our history has its successes and failures. You must look at their record in totality. I think Jimmy Carter was a joke. He accomplished nothing. But in his own way Clinon did a lot of good things. As an American I repect them both as our presidents and would never think of changing a street name because I din’t agree with them politicaly. I still suggest that anyone who changes street names for partisan reasons should be watching Oprah.
