Turnout may be higher than expected

According to Brett Arends at the Herald, turnout so far in the city of Boston (the only place where numbers are available) is considerably higher than expected, and is on track to surpass turnout in the 2002 primary.  Campaign workers elsewhere are also apparently reporting higher numbers than were expected.

The Boston numbers have to be good news for Tom Reilly, since they suggest that Mayor Menino’s GOTV operation has swung into action.

Memo to anyone who maybe thought this race was over in light of the polls: it’s not.  Do not let up, do not slow down.  If you want your candidate to win, make it happen.

  1. It's Nail Biting Time

Meninoites hitting the phones perhaps? What reps and senators are doing the same in their districts? Hint, not Mike Festa. 'Nuther hint. Tom Reilly people.

  2. There's nothing normal about this race

The frontrunner was virtually unknown a little over a year ago and he has far exceeded all expectations.  I don't buy into the voter turnout representing anything other than a genuine interest in politics after years of bidness as usual.  That's my call and I'll stick with it just based on all the evidence I saw with real voters and people checking back into the process.

  3. I'm Taking All Action on Reilly

    who'se paying 3:1?

  4. I wonder if it helps Reilly.

I have a Patrick sign on my front stairs.  Today the UPS guy rings my bell and first thing says, "Did you vote today?"  Cracked me up.  In fact, I had been waiting for him first.  [I have since voted.]

But another thing I thought from the last Patrick rally I attended:  these people were not going to forget to vote. This was not weak support.  And the demographic was broader than any political rally I've been to in this state.

  5. People finally have some good choices

I am seriously torn right now-torn between Deval and Gabs. Even though I prefer him as a candidate, I don't think Deval is mean enough to withstand the right-wing noise machine. There will be serious negative attack ads, and probably some Rovian antics aimed at the Dem nominee. I'm headed to my precinct after work, and I'm still waffling.

    • vote deval

There are serious differences between the two. First of all Deval IS strong enough to take on Healy.  True democrats have been saying for a long time that we need candidates who are strong on issues and don't back down or seem like a wishy washy centrist - Deval is that guy.  Deval has been earing your vote for two years, while Gabs just barely slipped through the convention.  Gabs does not favor paying tuition for immigrants in our state... wouldn't education for all benefit all? Deval has a higher "likeable" factor in every poll, and when this race becomes national he will be the best poised to beat Healy.

    • Vote for Deval

Most people don't vote for "mean."  They vote for charisma or someone who seems like a "good guy."  They also vote for something new or different: witness George W. Bush, Jesse Ventura, "Ahnold," Mitt Romney, etc.  Gabrielli is a decent policy wonk, and I actually think he'd be a decent governor, but he has not connected with the general voting public in the same way that Deval has.

    • Ditto.

Fact is, Deval would never have gotten to where he is in life, and had the variety of success he's had, without being pretty tough.  He can handle Kerry Healey and her minions.

      • Or

Without making all the right noises.

As far as I can tell, he's been on his knees his entire life.

        • lol

How does one equate going from abject poverty to being a successful multi-millionaire being "on his knees his entire life?"

Seriously, enquiring minds want to know!

          • Abject poverty?

I bet his earliest memories are about Milton Academy.

Wouldn't such a success story imply that he played by the rules, anyways? Dissidents and people with backbones usually aren't given an opportunity to be successful.

            • huh?

I just don't get what you mean by sentence two and three - that Deval cheated his way to Milton?

Regardless, I assure you Deval remembers just what it was like before he went to Milton; he didn't go to Milton until he was 14. I don't know about you, but I can even remember individual conversations I had at 14 or the clothes I wore - never mind what life was like back then.

  6. Help Sonia Win

It's not too late to join us to get more votes for Sonia Chang-Diaz.  Call 617-848-0875.

  7. Turnout was pretty light

in my precinct in Melrose.  I voted a little after 5 and I was the 208th voter.  That seems pretty low to me.  There was almost no activity, just one old Rielly guy sitting on a chaise lounge.

  8. Somerville Ward-2 Precinct-1 Numbers

For a total of 1165 eligible voters, there were 412 votes cast by 7:10PM, with very very low traffic into the station.

However, that's about 35%, which is approaching Presidential numbers.

Lots of honks of support for Deval Patrick and John Bonifaz placards.

One woman who said she voted for Deval, said that Bonifaz was 'a jerk' but declined to say why or substantiate in any way. (having met him several times, I thoroughly disagree).

Another voter, who said she voted for Deval and Bonifaz, was asking what the Secretary of State office does. I spoke to high-level responsibilities in voting rights (she knew), investments and administration, touting Bonifaz's administration experience as the founder of NVRI, obvious voting rights experience, and the general qualifications of both Galvin and Bonifaz regarding investments, as they are both lawyers and would reasonably rely on others for financial advice.

  9. 7:55pm, looks like the Patrick field had a ...

field day.  High turnout numbers for their 1s and 2s.  Remarkably high, actually.  Gabs call lists were quite short, understandably but repeat calls to Us were the order of the day.  He'll have to pull some significant numbers if he's going to compete with the Patrick turnout. Reilly won't get out of the teens.

  10. Not in Watertown

We had town council levels of turnout here.
