That school rating idiot Mathews tries to defend himself

  I appreciated the thoughtful comments on the Newsweek high schools list, and i don’t expect busy readers of this website to read the three books or dozens of columns I have written on this issue to get my side of it. I realize I have a very contrarian point of view on how to judge schools. But I sense many users of this intriguing website share my view that the way we judge schools now—by average test scores—is not worth much because it is mostly a measure of parental incomes, and not the quality of the teaching.   There is a much quicker way to get a sense of what I am saying, and why this obviously narrow and simple measure has some worth, taking us in an entirely new direction and recognizing the great efforts of fine teachers in some very disadvantaged schools. The problem in the very advantaged Mass. high schools mentioned in some postings, and in most schools in this country,  is that access to AP is restricted.
