I strongly urge everyone to visit Media Nation as soon as possible and watch the Robert Greenwald Fox clip (posted this morning).
Thanks to our friend Dan Kennedy for posting this. Chilling is an understatement.

Do the commanders of our military stand up and point out that their duty is to defend and obey the Constitution, not the President?
jimc says
It would be harder for Bush to attack Iran. Theoretically.
tim-little says
Is “Theoretically.”
kbusch says
We will see whether Clinton and Edwards learned anything about their votes for the AUMF against Iraq by how they handle Iran.
laurel says
Am i correct in my reading of the AUMF that it is not Iraq-specific, but can be used by and president against any entity s/he trumps up a connection to with Al Queda?

The difficulty is that, under the unitary executive theory, the Cheney Regency believes it has monarchical powers. Some of those guys didn’t even think the AUMF was necessary.

I see now that the source i was consulting had truncated the text.

As for HRM Bush et al. yes, that is abundantly clear. Laws? We don’t need no stinkin laws! The question in my mind is, will they leave willingly at the end of their term? Call me a paranoid moonbat, but this administration has never failed in one thing: their relentless pursuit of the extra-legal. I put nothing past them.
kbusch says
If you really want to hear voices in your head, Atrios recently linked to a wingnut that wants the Bush Administration to carry out a coup d’etat and remain past January 2009.
centralmassdad says
I am less concerned that they will refuse to leave on January 21, 2009, and more concerned that they will be even more reckless from November through January, especially if HRC or Obama is to be the successor.

Finally, the bouncing NIE from the insufficiently compliant intelligence community:

Isn’t it great to second-guess? Does this bleating make you all feel better? Pray to God that we don’t have a repeat of 9/11, if only that you will be able to smugly continue your loopiness. And, Charley, suffer me no remarks about undocumented facts, etc. I don’t see that your side of the equation ever lets facts get in the way of left-wing opinions.
jimc says
Edgar, how many countries do we have to invade to prevent another September 11? All of them?

or the bleating goes on.

Just address the question: Do you think going to war against Iran is a good idea, or not? Otherwise, what the hell is your point?
edgarthearmenian says
I do not want to go to war with Iran. As Hilary told Obama the president should always keep her options open and not paint herself into a corner.
You know very well that the point is that it is not necessary to blather about Iran and assume the worst intentions on the part of this administration.(although admittedly at times they deserve such suspicions). What, indeed, will be your reaction if Iran attacks Israel with one of its Abombs?
tim-little says
<

Aside from political rhetoric — from both Theran and Washington — do we have any actual evidence that Iran poses an imminent threat to Israel? Or is this just more speculative fearmongering?
<
p>
I think it is reasonable to presume that Iran wants to reclaim its former role as a regional power; I do not see how nuclear engagement with Israel fits into that game plan.

…I am very disappointed by the terrorists. As far as I can tell, they pretty much “shot their wad” with 9/11, and have since had a few side shows in Madrid and London. Perhaps a little more, although the Kurds did have a little aftershock in Istanbul. Otherwise, the terrorists have shown themselves to be pretty much incompentent.

Regarding the AUMF being limited to Iraq, I do hope that you realize that the Bush malAdministration has been and will continue to try to link Iran with the insurgency in Iraq. That is what they have been doing for at least the last year, and they will claim that the AUMF also extends to Iran because of that linkage, and given that they don’t need a further congressional resolution to attack Iran. It is, of course, nonsense that they would not need a further congressional resolutio to attack Iran, but that is how they are going to spin it.

HRH (His Royal Highness) Charley McCarthy (GWBush) is going to do whatever Edgar Bergan (Cheney) wants him to do, regardless of the bleatings of the moo-cows in Congress.

Lest anyone wonder, the first paragraph is sarcasm. The American “Heimatsicherheitsamt” (“Department of Homeland Security” but we enjoy the German) is nothing more than a federal pig fest. That was shown a couple of years ago, when it was reported that the state of Indiana had more potential terrorist targets than the entire state of New York, and, as a result, should get more federal anti-terrorism money. That was absurd then, and it still is.
