Bob Barr to the rescue (of the Democrats)

It’s so much fun to watch irony play out in real time.  Today’s installment: Bob Barr, one of the leaders of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, has now decided that he’s going to do the Democrats the biggest favor possible.

He’s running for president.

Barr has a enough of a national profile that he could prove a real annoyance to John McCain.  Barr won’t win any states, but he could be a factor in purple states that both sides really need to win.

Bob Barr: the Ralph Nader of the right.  How delightful.

  1. Cook Before Eating ..

My wife is always ranting on about how the pizza boxes always say "cook before eating" in about 10 prominent places. For me its cigarette lighters that say "do not light near face as may start fire". Bob Barr actualy gets it.

  2. The $quot;Debate$quot; Debate

Thank goodness for Barr. He may be the best thing the Dems have seen in several weeks/months. Problem now is that we're going to need to make sure he gets a seat at the debates, rekindling the standard "who gets to debate" debate.

    • Not so sure

I am afraid that Barr wont have the same affect since his main appeal is to Paultards and libertarians-people that haven't been voting Republican anyway. He is too liberal on issues like drugs, abortion, and Iraq to get any disaffected social conservatives to vote for him instead of McCain. Libertarians also typically support open borders and amnesty so I doubt that would endear him to the right either. Certainly his past history of social conservatism and his solid wing nut government elimination credentials might endear him to some members of the Club for Growth and the religious right, but I am afraid his recent respect for civil liberties-while endearing to those of us that respect them-might not gain him the votes of those that despise them on the right.

Needless to say heres hoping Im wrong and itd be interesting to see how this plays out-especially in Texas where McCain has very weak support and some polls show Obama within a few percentage points of the geezer.

      • Peel away the appeal

I do not think it is a question of Barr's appeal so much as his abilty to cast doubt upon McCain so he loses his appeal. Barr has no qualms about being the most nauseating person at the dinner table. Good for him, let him go after McCain for any number of issues - it only helps us.

  3. Ron Paul plans to revolt at GOP convention

Barr won't be the only reason to pop a bucket o corn!

...the forces of Rep. Ron Paul have been organizing across the country to stage an embarrassing public revolt against Sen. John McCain when Republicans gather for their national convention in Minnesota at the beginning of September...

...what's been largely overlooked is Paul's candidacy as a reflection of a powerful lingering dissatisfaction with the Arizona senator among the party's most conservative conservatives.

The story goes on to say what I've been saying for a while now.

Just take a look at recent Republican primary results, largely overlooked because McCain locked up the necessary 1,191 delegates long ago. In Indiana, McCain got 77% of the recent Republican primary vote, Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, who've each long ago quit and endorsed McCain, still got 10% and 5% respectively, while Paul took 8%.

On the same May 6 in North Carolina, McCain received less than three-quarters of Republican votes (74%), while Huckabee got 12%, Paul 7% and Alan Keyes and No Preference took a total of 7%.

Pennsylvania was even slightly worse for the GOP's presumptive nominee, who got only 73% to a combined 27% for Paul (16%) and Huckabee (11%).

  4. Best news yet.

I laughed out loud when I read this on TPM.  Holy shit.  McCain can kiss the evangelical right goodbye stat.  Barr is the answer to their wet dreams.

What goes around comes around.  Gotta love the symmetry.
