Newsweek just reported that the McCains are overdue on a tax bill in La Jolla, CA. It wasn’t like they missed a single payment, they haven’t payed taxes on this property for 4 years.
McCain’s team claimed ignorance. They were completely unaware of it until Newsweek questioned the unpaid property tax. But fear not, McCain jumped on the issue and his campaign gave Newsweek a receipt of the past due tax bill.
Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42.
But one problem, they didn’t owe $6744.42, they owed $8468.42. That’s correct, not only were they overdue in paying taxes for 4 years, when they decided to finally pay it, they screwed that up too.
County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1.
Yeah, kind of gives you a good feeling about how McCain manages his finances.

It’s just so hard running 7 households. All those receipts to remember! Can’t you be a little more understanding? Gosh do I ever feel for Lady McCain!

(1) McCain is a rich guy? As CentralMassDad tirelessly points out, that doesn’t resonate as an issue until the populace can detect signs of sneering. Otherwise optimistic Americans tend to think they’ll eventually own seven houses too.
<
p>(2) McCain is not such a good executive? See his team can’t even pay their property taxes.
<
p>Unless we can draw a useful angle, pushing this story risks sounding petty.
<
p>Too bad, because it seems as if it could be good material.

“A lapse by a Pittsburgh bank caused a late payment of more than $10,000 in property taxes owed on a vacation home overlooking Nantucket Sound shared by Massachusetts Senator John F. p>I was also amid the crowd outside Faneiul Hall at the Weld/Kerry debate chanting ‘Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Condo Kerry Has To Go!’ because of his illegal sweetheart condo deal.

McCain likes to push that he’s a man of the people, regular folk and all that. He likes to push that hoping to resinate with people, here’s an example, and AP Article called: McCain Travels Amtrak Like Everyone Else, he even has a freakin’ biography called Man of the People: The Life of John McCain. Some people eat this stuff up and factor it in the decision making of a candidate. They ask themselves if the person they are voting for really understands what regular people go through day to day. When McCain likes to sell himself in that way he should be called out when he has so many houses he can’t keep track of his tax bills. Is that what regular folk go through? Does McCain really understand what the hell is going on? Here a good one noted at MyDD, at a town hall meeting someone asked him when was the last time go pumped his own gas and how much did it cost. The reply?
<
p>
<
p>He has no clue how much gas costs or the last time he pumped gas himself. But hey, no bigs, my people tell me what’s going on is his reply. Are you serious? No matter what CMD tries to explain away, it’s important to highlight McCain’s knowledge of what’s going on. He goes to Baghdad and thinks everything is rosy because he has 100 Soldiers, 3 Blackhawks, 2 Apache Gunships with him. I think we have had enough of a president who had no idea of what’s going on. All set. Should we highlight McCain’s inconsistency, with all apologies to CMD, you are damn right we should.

True story – Madelyn Albright on NPR. Said she wanted to apologize to ’41’.
<
p>She admitted that she thought it was OK to dump on him because he probably hadn’t done any of his own food shopping.
<
p>After leaving office, she pulled into a gas station. And waited. And waited. Finally, somebody honked at her, so she pulled forward and went into the station. Turns out that self-service had been introdued during her time in office, riding around in them big, black cars. So – she wanted to apologize to GHWB about making fun of him about the scanner.

A great deal of the John McCain persona does seem to be crafted artfully from mâché. Yup.
<
p>Forgetting to pay one’s bills, though, is not terribly unusual. Lots of people do it, not just the hoity toity.
<
p>I think there’s also a structural imbalance here between conservatives and progressives. Progressives are generally arguing for the common good. To say one must do this or that for the common good, one must know the common good pretty darn well. Otherwise, one could be advocating for well meaning messes. Conservatives, except on moral issues or foreign affairs, tend to take the side of libertarians or to place their trust in the market. In a sense, those are default positions, so they don’t set a high bar for what one has to know about the lives of most Americans.
<
p>I point this out, because I’m trying to figure out how Republicans can get away with pretending to have the common touch and how Democrats can never seem to ever shake the impression of lacking it. It may be that Democrats have to be really strong in that area, and Republicans don’t.
Taking the other side.
<
p>McCain’s modes of transportation all seem to open him up to playing make believe. As you say, johnk, the walk through Baghdad, the trip on Amtrak, and the campaign bus packed with adoring, sycophantic reporters are all open to mockery and debunking.
<
p>As Atrios wisely pointed out, we might not expect our candidates to know the price of milk, bananas, or home heating oil. However, the price of gasoline has been very much in the news. McCain’s not knowing the price of gas is a sign of his simply being out of it — like not understanding the Shiite/Sunni distinction or his being unable to use a computer.

Have a look at the McCain estates. There are 10-13 of them, depending on how you count. Enjoy the ride.

He should thank Newsweek.

If late payment on a property tax bill is the dirt the DNC is dishing on McCain, it’s going to be a long 4 months.
johnk says
That’s not the DNC. McCain being clueless and taking down the pretend man of the people is worthwhile. No matter what you believe. Today’s gem, he doesn’t know the difference between Sudan and Somalia. We know that’s not the first time he was corrected. Lieberman wasn’t there to help out this time, one of his cronies had to step in this time. Then you have the issue about the price of gas which we shouldn’t worry about, he doesn’t have a clue but his people tell him it’s bad. Keep on dreaming gary.
