Post-holiday open thread

My wife gave me the DVD set of the 2004 Red Sox series against the Yankees and Cardinals. My goodness, those games were LONG, epic battles; game 5 was 5 hours, 42 minutes. That's longer than Tristan. I'm just getting through the “good parts,” and it's taking me most of the day.

I wanted to do a post on charity giving; to what charities have you given this year? Anyone know of a few good, reputable veterans' charities — particularly those that deal with health issues, including mental health?

Do check out Jason Linkins' 10 Best and 10 Worst Media Moments of 2008.  And consider that the worst were more obvious, and more likely committed by the larger news orgs. Ugh.

  1. giving

Since MFI & Co are celebrating the hate on Jan 10th (day of the national doma protest) with a fundraiser to defeat the Trans Rights Bill, I encourage supporters of civil equality to give an offsetting donation to MassEquality or the MA Transgender Political Coalition.

My partner and I give annually to a wide range of charities which we place in the following categories: reproductive rights, women, lgbt, international human rights, 3rd world development, nature conservancy, climate/alt energy and peace & left media.  We also give time and services to the local lgbt rights organization and to pflag, as well as donate new clothing and other items to local homeless shelters.  You see, gay people do care about more than just gay people (some of you need reminding of that).

  2. Salvation Army

Before anyone drops another quarter into the red pail, you may want to read this about the Salvation Army's movement towards New Apostolic Reformation.  As a teaser, I leave you with the logo of their new institution, The War College.

    • Social Service Organizations

Until a few years ago, we gave generously to the Salvation Army, because I do believe that they do good work.  We made the decision to drop them from our list in roder to support others with less of a religious focus.

We support a number of non-profits ranging from social service to scientific researh to environmental organizations.  I prefer not to go into detail since I don't exactly post anonymously.

      • It is tough

The Salvation Army does a lot of good work.  However, like so many organizations, they do some work that is not so good.  I will often give them some money, but I usually reserve larger donations for groups that I know help those in need without mating that help to an agenda.

  4. Support soldiers now!

This is a time of crisis and support for freedom's soldiers can be made here.
