The Republican Party continues to shrink into its extremist base. This is the kind of thing that is making it increasingly difficult for Charlie Baker or any other Republican to win in Massachusetts. Associated Press:
An Idaho Republican gubernatorial hopeful insists he was only joking when he said he’d buy a license to hunt President Barack Obama.
Rex Rammell, a long-shot candidate slated to run against incumbent C.L. “Butch” Otter in the May 2010 GOP primary, made the comment at a Republican rally Tuesday in Twin Falls where talk turned to the state’s planned wolf hunt, for which hunters must purchase an $11.50 wolf tag. The hunt is due to begin on Tuesday.
When an audience member shouted a question about “Obama tags,” Rammell responded, “The Obama tags? We’d buy some of those.”
Rammell has refused to apologize (although he did subsequently clarify that he does not want to assassinate the President). Typically, however, and here is the real story: “Officials with the Idaho Republican Party in Boise didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.” And today, well into the news cycle, they still haven’t. Maybe they think people won’t notice, maybe they think its not a big deal, or maybe they see some advantage from comments like this. Thus, the decline of the G.O.P. as a viable national party.

Somebody jokes about committing violence — you call them on it, then and there. It’s simply unacceptable, period. Don’t believe me good sir? Ask Nancy Reagan what she thinks about violence toward politicians.

What’s this guy Rammell doing in office? He should be given an ultimatum–to either watch his mouth or get voted out of office.

Just as disgusting as John Kerry and Al Franken joking killing George Bush.

Both of those jokes are over the line. Even if they weren’t about the President, neither would be funny. Kerry should refrain from attempting humor. As for the other guy – now that he, Al Franken, has a new job, maybe he’ll spare us his attempts as well.

It appears that he is a candidate for the GOP nomination for Governor is already considered a long-shot fringe candidate.

Even somebody who’s a candidate for their party’s nomination for any kind of office should be a bit more cautious and realize that those kind of jokes are totally inappropriate.
