Day September 10, 2009

Blogosphere raises $717,187 and counting for G.O.P. Shouter’s Opponent

Excellent work, Team BMG. In about 24 hours you helped raise over $717,187 for Joe Miller, the Democratic opponent to disgraced regressive Joe Wilson a.k.a. “The G.O.P. Shouter.” On the two ActBlue pages I made, while figuring out how their system works, 19 people have given $490 through “S.C. Deserves a Respectable Congressman” and six people have given $135 through “Shouter Joe Wilson has to go!”

To put this development in context, in 2008 Miller raised $614,487 and won 45% of the vote. Wilson gathered $1.16 million. Thus, in just 24 hours Miller has raised more than he did in the entire last election cycle, when he ran a strong race. Complete details from OpenSecrets are on the flip, and here.

Closer to home, as discussed at some length in the comments to my piece yesterday, it remains to be seen whether Republican candidates Charlie Baker and Christy Mihos will denounce the tactics of members of their party like The Shouter, the Birthers, the Deathers, and the Lone Wolves with guns. If they don’t, one must assume they endorse the positions of their fellow Republicans, from their Vice Presidential nominee to the Shouter and on down — otherwise, why run as a Republican. That will be a tough electoral sell, I suspect: “I am not a crackpot” hardly has the sound of a winning campaign slogan.

MassProgress.org – MoveOn Politics for Massachusetts

For the past several years we have seen MoveOn.org go from a grassroots movement to a political powerhouse (and still hold true to its grassroots values). So that got me thinking, what if we had our own MoveOn.org for Massachusetts. An updated on the bottle bill? A Progressive speaker of the house? Progressive Democrats elected throughout the state? Envisioning what that could mean for the future of our Commonwealth I decided it was time to take action. Please visit MassProgress.org to find out more and sign up today. Thanks for your support!

Ed O’reilly will not be Candidate for U.S. Senate

from Ed O’reilly’s email to supporters… I will not be a Candidate for U.S. Senate After careful deliberation and honest personal reflection, I have decided NOT to seek election to the United States Senate in the upcoming Massachusetts special election.   Since last September’s Democratic Primary Challenge to Senator Kerry, I have returned to my criminal defense law practice.  Nearly thirty years ago, I took an oath to represent my clients zealously AND to the best of my ability.   While I contemplated my candidacy, it became apparent that I could not uphold my oath as an attorney and also run in a statewide election, at this time. I want to thank the hundreds of people who have offered their ideas and support over the last several days.  Your kindness and thoughtfulness has been heartfelt. Thank you! Ed   ed@edoreilly.com

Andy Card Makes Scott Brown His B***CH In Record Time

So, the Commonwealth’s greatest gay-marriage hating, profanity-laced-tirade loving politician, State Senator Scott Brown was all guns a blazing to launch a mavericky bid for the big time and a US Senate seat.  All signs pointed to a campaign launch today…until he bumped into Andy Card last night at a Newton Republican meeting and laid down in record time.  After huddling with the senior man, Brown was positively tripping over his feet to step aside and brown nose Card, even though Card didn’t actually even say he was running.  From NECN:

“Massachusetts Leads Nation in Health Care Coverage”

Massachusetts leads yet again. Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center: A larger percentage of people in Massachusetts have health care coverage than in any other state in the nation, according to data released by the Census Bureau today. Census estimates state that more than 94 percent of residents in the Commonwealth had health insurance in the 2007-2008 period, with Hawaii a distant second at just over 92 percent. Nationally, only 85 percent of people in the United States had health coverage in the 2007-2008 period. Of course, we could all pay about 5% less for health care, get better coverage, not be tied to our jobs, have no risk, and insure everyone, not just 94 in 100, with Medicare for all. But I guess someone has to pay for #1 Massachusetts health insurer Aetna CEO Ron William’s $30.86 million compensation for being so good at denying coverage: us. The whole report is here.
