The face of heroism

If you haven’t yet read the astonishing story of Sergeant Kimberly Munley, read it now.  Munley, if you hadn’t heard, is the police officer who, upon learning that there was shooting going on at Fort Hood, more or less ran directly toward it, risking her life (she was hit several times), and took down the shooter.

Inside the soldier readiness facility on this Army post, Major Nidal M. Hasan opened fire with two pistols, one of them semiautomatic, officials said. The gunfire was continuous, methodical, and well-aimed. Unarmed soldiers who had been waiting for medical appointments scattered or dropped to the floor…. Munley, 34 years old and trained in tactics developed in the wake of the Columbine massacre, raced toward the gunfire. She arrived at 1:27 p.m., about four minutes after the first 911 call, as Hasan was fleeing the building, according to official accounts.

Munley rounded a corner and fired twice at Hasan. He fired back and charged at her, according to the accounts. Munley dropped to the ground in a protective position and continued firing.

At some point, Hasan began to fumble with his gun. “He’s reloading,” someone screamed, according to an officer on the scene.

In the exchange, Munley was struck in both thighs and one wrist. Hasan was shot four times.

There’s no telling how many lives Sgt. Munley saved.  All Americans are in her debt.  Thank you, Sgt. Munley.

  1. Police deserve appreciation

Thanks for posting this, David. It's a reminder that cops provide essential services - sometimes heroic services - to communities and deserve our respect and support. Most cops are good people trying to do a difficult job. Say a friendly, "Hello, officer," next time you see one. They'll appreciate it.

  2. Sgt. Munley

Thank you for posting this David.  My heart goes out to all impacted by this tragedy and especially to Sgt. Munley.  Trauma and terror are indelible.  May the gratitude of those you saved bring you peace.

  3. The Right Stuff

According to this report, Sgt. Munley has been a hero before, possibly saving her patrol partner's life in a confrontation with a suspect.

  4. So why do I feel nothing

Is she brave, yes but that is about it. She was in a situation which never should have happened.  False flag muslim terrorism, self imploding skyscrapers, government coverup then two wars withn completely unrelated countries.

    • Your question

may be better asked to a professional not this blog.

I don't think the skyscrapers imploded on themselves.  The hijacked airplane attacks were a factor.

Have a little respect for the dead or at least for those living with permanent heartaches.

    • Please seek professional help

    • so why are you still here?

This comment is beyond offensive.  It's delusional.

      Please get help.

      • No surprise

Part and parcel of lasthorseman's paranoid delusions is a vituperative hatred of all things American in the name of patriotism -- you know, like T. McVeigh.  Frankly, given previous commentary, it's probably an improvement that lasthorseman didn't announce his disappointment that Sergeant Munley is still alive.

While I have severe disagreements with many conservatives on this site, for the most part they avoid cheerleading death and murder the way lasthorseman does (though some have lovingly tracked American deaths in Afghanistan on this site recently).  As for why he is still permitted to post on this website, that's a question for the Editors, and perhaps lasthorseman's attendant therapist, to answer.

        • Does BMG still have Rules of the Road?

I'd forgotten about the "About time somebody stepped up" comment.  Truly horrible.

    • I've no idea why you are permitted

to continue to post on this site.  Your comments are WAY more offensive than the Sperm & Egg Guy's comments were and yet you get free rein.  I don't get it.

    • Don't forget the reptilian

humanoids, the Illuminati, the Rothschild, and Rockefellers all huddled in a bunker under Dulce, AZ plotting the New World Order.

Don't you have some David Icke's tapes you could be listening to instead of coming on here and saying stupid things that no one takes seriously?!

I'm sure you know you can subscribe to Coast to Coast AM or study the Protocols of the Elders of Zion for the umpteenth time.

    • Of course...

...it had nothing to do with somebody taking a gun and firing at others who had done nothing to deserve it.

No, it's never the fault of the nutjob who actually does the killing, is it?

    • ...

*[new] So why do I feel nothing (0.00 / 7)

The lack of question mark is curious. Are you asking a question or are you making a statement?  Surely, however, the attempt to either query or state derives from something you feel...

Is she brave, yes but that is about it.

Isn't that enough?  Perhaps you're overcomplicating things by asking for more...?

She was in a situation which never should have happened.  False flag muslim terrorism, self imploding skyscrapers, government coverup then two wars withn completely unrelated countries.

lotsa situations should never happen but do.  Lots of things never happen but should...  We, like Sergeant Munley, are only responsible for how we respond to them

  5. A true American Hero

    no party politics here.

  6. In Defense of the Editors:

One of the great things about Blue Mass Group is that the editors allow anyone to post.   The poster didn't call anyone names (which happens here), just expressed an opinion, one that many readers here disagree with.

I don't believe we should be fighting either of the two wars we are in right now.

Some thoughts from people much smarter than I:

If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.  ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values.  For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.  ~John F. Kennedy

We can never be sure that the opinion we are endeavoring to stifle is a false opinion; and if we were sure, stifling it would be an evil still.  ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.  ~Noam Chomsky

    • Misguided advice.

People have been banned from this site for behavior other than name-calling.  A variety of opinion is both tolerated and encouraged on this site.  That said, name-calling is simply childish silly stuff, and if that's the threshold for getting banned around here, then the editors have bigger problems than we might imagine.

Your defense of free speech is both misplaced and something insulting, too, I might add.  The beauty of a site like this is that a) you generally get to say what you want BUT b) people get to evaluate it on the merits.    People here voted, appropriately in my opinion, that the comment was trollish.  I'm sure the commenter will get over it; it's not like he's not had his share of zeroes before.   Sometimes it's not the comment per se but the pattern of behavior which contributes to the ratings people get.  People generally reap here what they sow.

      • 7 of 10

Seven of the ten comments that the community has judged outside the bounds of tolerable discourse (8 'delete comment' ratings) were by lasthorseman.  I think that says something about his credibility around here, but his insistence on deriding anything reality-based is a powerful demonstration of how little he cares.

That said, McCrea should be congratulated for being the VERY rare candidate who posts something on BMG after his/her candidacy has ended.

    • Re: Mill

Mill also clearly states that people with mental disorders have no freedom of speech or political participation.

    • Careful what you step on.

"I don't believe we should be fighting either of the two wars we are in right now."

While the wars were evil in the last administration they are glorious missions now that our Party is in power.  An attack on our wars in now an attack on the Party.  (Oh, and America, too! ...& motherhood!)

I did like your Kennedy quote.  (Don't tell anyone...)
