Brown advertising on birther website [updated]

UPDATE: Heh, well I might have my enthusiasm get the better of me on this one.  It does appear, as EaBo helpfully points out in the comments, that this ad is homemade by the CFP website proprietor, and not purchased by the Brown campaign.  Clearly I shouldn’t write these posts at midnight.  So, um, never mind.  :)


Scott Brown has purchased advertising space on Canada Free Press.  And back in 2008, our friendly neighbors to the north at CFP were really excited about the idea that Barack Obama was not a natural-born citizen, and thus was ineligible to serve as president.  Here’s a screenshot taken from this article — note the ad running to the right.  (Click for larger image.)

Nice.  

Oh, and by the way, don’t think Brown gets off the hook because this article is from 2008.  This site has an impressive history of craziness that continues to the present.  Here, for example, are some excerpts from today’s top story, entitled “Why we must support Israel”:

This is not the end of this article. It will be in four parts. Of course I am anticipating the howls of rage from Muslims and others who do not believe in God and all of their angry comments will be answered.

Anyway, it’s not like the crazies were hiding out somewhere on this site.  They’re front and center on the main page.  Kinda reminds you of the time we caught Brown advertising on a site that was advocating a military takeover of the United States (that was Newsmax).  WTF, did Brown’s campaign take out ads on every wingnutty website they could find?  Wait, don’t answer that.

Oh, and one more thing.  Looking back at the Newsmax story, I was amused to read the ad that Brown was running before they pulled it.  It read:

Meet the Republican running for Ted Kennedy’s Seat: State Senator Scott Brown

What?  ”Ted Kennedy’s Seat”?  Good God, sir, have you at last no decency??  It isn’t “Ted Kennedy’s seat”!  It’s the people’s seat!  I know because Scott Brown said so!  And everything Scott Brown says is true!  Oh wait….

    Scott Brown according to CNN Scott Brown has run a model on-line campaign. Those ads are GOOGLE ads.  So I don't think the Brown camp took the time to research the millions of sites on the internet and stop the ads from running on all of them.

    Nice try though David.  sources close to the campaign tell me that Brown's on-line media buy may outdo Pags=Jobs.

    "Scott Brown has run what you'd call a model campaign online, using Google AdWords text ads to direct people searching for him and for Coakley to his campaign website," Google spokesman Galen Panger said.

    Brown's campaign is not only placing Google AdWords, but taking it one step further, launching a "Google Network blast." This, according to Panger, "allows a campaign to 'flood the airwaves' online at key moments of a campaign, and put their image ads on Web sites all over the web for a particular location."

      This is exactly the same as the Google ad server feeding Scientology ads to Slate. As I type this, I see Brown's smiling face immediately to my right. Did Brown buy ads on Blue Mass Group? No. It's another Google ad.

        As EaBo notes below, the ad on CFP is not a Google ad - it's a homemade ad by the proprietor of the CFP site.  I have updated my post accordingly.

      • Indeed, Dan - it's like the BMG 'ad' on the right, with George Bush's smiling face with Scott Brown's name (doubtless to convince the unwary that Bush is running for Senate here).

            My comment, like yours and only minutes apart, was addressed to Dan Kennedy's remark that it was like the Salon google feed.  I even called him 'Dan'.

            I admit, I WAS amused that the ad was the same thing that BMG had done, but was not recognized as such.  As you said, midnight is a bad time for indignation.

              Rob's comment clarifying that it's not a Google ad went up at 5:52 a.m.  I saw it at around 9 a.m. and updated my post as soon as I verified that he was right.  So ... you (and Dan, by the way) are at least 3 hours out of date.  An eternity in the blogosphere.  ;-)

    That Ad is a homemade ad by the CFP person.  It is not a Scott Brown Ad.  All Scott brown ads have the paid for by. Including the ones that have been up on our site for the past month and a half.

    Really nice try though.

  4. Isn't there anything important we can say about Scott Brown?

    Seriously, if you'd spent two minutes to think about it you could see that the Brown campaign didn't buy this ad. In addition to not having the "paid for" text, it links directly to the campaign web site with no way to track the click-through so the site gets paid. You guys should certainly understand how this works...

    The previous post on the main page is about a mistake the Globe made 28 years ago. It's not even clear that Brown told them that Rugg was his great grandfather and would anyone care now if he did?

    All this just leaves the impression that there's nothing wrong with this guy so we have to resort to this ridiculous and, in at least one case, inaccurate nitpicking. Please, let's talk about why Scott Brown shouldn't be our next Senator. There's plenty of material.

      enlighten us!  Yeah, I made a mistake on this one.  But at least I'm trying.  I can't do it all myself.

      And I do think the NYT/modeling thing is funny.

        Looking at the main page, it's not so much a lack of useful content as the prevalence of worthless stuff. The top three posts are useless (and I'd include this post even if it were true)! Charley's "push poll" post isn't much better. I don't think that even qualifies as a push-poll. Imagine someone new to the site or someone who doesn't come here often seeing that because the election piqued their interest. Will they even bother to scroll down?

        You should bump your endorsement of Coakley to the top and maybe bump some of the legitimate stuff about Brown, too. One of the reasons I don't come here much anymore is that there's way too many trivial "gotchas" posted (not to sound like Sarah Palin).

        Tell you, what. I'll write a post on Scott Brown and health care. Promote it if you like it.

    Martha is advertising on the crazy BMG site. You would not believe the crazy shit I've read on that site.

    tell Catholics where they can work and where they cant work - she is one of the worst candidates I have seen since Kerry ran for President - where do they find these people?
