It’s budget time again for the city, time to cut the schools. As a Boston resident and BPS parent, I tried again and again the get the candidates for mayor who posted here on BMG to address the economic causes for the decline in city revenue. Basically nothing was proposed that was better than Menino’s non-answers.
Respondents will tell me about the grants etc that will go to fund city schools. However I have one child in an exam school, and another on the way. They will not receive those funds, in fact they are actually costing only $4000/student at these schools. Frankly we are not some sad family that will kiss your feet for a few crumbs. We are looking for a real education from a well-performing school.
The mayor’s race was a big failure as far as I’m concerned when it comes to these issues. Middle-class development that could have resulted in higher revenue was overlooked for fancy buzzwords. Instead of jobs, we heard about green jobs. Instead of raising incomes, we heard about demanding money from the state and the Feds. The Democratic machine which saved Menino’s bacon did not serve the people properly. This is part of the reason for the enthusiasm gap in the Senate race, and other office-holders should take note before such gaps appear in their own support.
