Help stop Paul Adams’s extremist agenda

Dear BMG Community,

My name is Patricia Commane. I’m a Democratic activist, state committee member, town committee chair, and now candidate for State Representative. And I need your help.

I never thought I’d find myself running for public office. For the past 20 years, I’ve pursued a satisfying career as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Every day, I help individuals with disabilities achieve economic independence by helping them get jobs and create small businesses. I love my work.

Yet, this year, our longtime Democratic State Rep decided not to run for reelection. When I saw the choice our district faced on the Republican side, I knew the stakes were too high for me to sit the election out. I felt compelled to get involved.

My opponent, Paul Adams, is an extreme social conservative being supported by some of the most radical groups in the state. He is the former Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Director at The Coalition for Marriage and Family, a far-right anti-LGBT and anti-choice group. Paul is self-funding his campaign to the tune of at least $35,000, and has accepted donations from Kris Mineau, President of the Massachusetts Family Institute and co-chair of Vote On Marriage.org. The group’s other co-founder, Roberto Miranda, has publicly described homosexuality as “a virus,” and claimed it was “no coincidence” that the September 11 terror attacks originated in Boston. There is no question that, if elected, Paul Adams would fight to roll back the progress so many have fought for.

If elected State Representative I will stand up for the progressive values we share by protecting marriage equality and a woman’s right to choose, and advocating passage the Bottle Bill and construction on Cape Wind. (My opponent recently said “the jury’s still out” on whether climate change exists.)  But first I need to defeat one of the toughest candidates the state Republicans are fielding this year anywhere in Massachusetts.

This race is a bellwether for Massachusetts this cycle; like many of the higher-up-the-ticket races, ours, according to our own polling, is too close to call.

I’m writing today because I need your help. To defeat the resources available to Paul Adams through his self-financing, I need a strong network of grassroots supporters to help turn out the vote in these final days.

This is a race we can win, but everything depends on what happens in the 8 days until November 2nd. I need your help, your friends’ help, and their friends’ help volunteering and getting out the vote. Please call 617-512-7656 to become a volunteer, or visit our website link to: for more information.

If we work hard and come together to stand up against Paul Adams and his extremist allies, I know we can win.

  1. Or

Finding no support in my district can you guys please help me rescue my campaign?

    • Hey, EaBo

Your snide comment just earned Pat a donation from me, EaBo.

Couldn't Wouldn't have done it without ya.

      Thanks,

      • Glad I could help

        • How's that trolling for you, anyway?

Do you find that taunting opponents by stalking left-wing blogs attracts any right-wing votes for your (bigoted) candidates?

          /snark off

          • Yeah I'm gonna take civility in elections lessons from you

The video, which Ehrlich initially defended as "satire," portrays then-gubernatorial candidate Kerry Healey and all Republicans as racists who support slavery, among other offenses.

The 23-year-old Adams, a political-science major at UMass Dartmouth who grew up on Jessie Street in Swampscott, recently became Ehrlich's campaign manager, replacing Shelley Sackett, who was her campaign manager before the Feb. 5 primary.

Told that the Reporter had seen his video, Adams said it is "something I did a while ago," adding that he does a lot online. The video, called "Kerry Healey's Roller Coaster," could at one point be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... though Adams has since removed the video and closed his YouTube account.

But it's ok to do stuff like that when you're a loyalist right Ryan?

"I was a big supporter of (Governor) Deval Patrick and still am," Adams said Thursday, Feb. 7. "I've been a loyalist for the party and the values we all share."

The video is accompanied by a song that suggests, among other things, "There's no need to join the Klan, just become a Republican" and "Give a gun to every man" and has art scenes which place horns and a devil's tail on former Gov. Mitt Romney. A confederate flag is also associated with the Republican Party in the video.

So save me the righteous indignation OK.  I merely pointed out what I know to be the facts on the ground.  Have you been in the district?  I know there were close to 50 people canvasing for Adams last week. I know no one showed up to support Patty at the debate on Sunday when Paul had dozens of supporters do so.  She has no visible signs of support in the district.  So deal with it.

            • I live in a neighboring district

I have seen plenty of yard signs and other indications of support.  Plenty of those rallying for Finegold at that debate are her supporters as well.  Your attitude and tone on this particular thread have been very off-putting.

  2. Paul Adams' denial of Global Climate Change

To question the science of climate change today is like questioning whether seat belts save lives. The science could not be any clearer, and that any person wanting to serve the public would question it is both depressing and frightening. That is why we were compelled to write the letter below and share it with BMG.

The following letter was sent to the editors of the papers that serve the district.

    Dear Editor,

I was shocked to hear State Rep Candidate Paul Adams' denial of Climate Change at the League of Women Voters debate on Sunday 10/24. His assertions that 'the jury is still out' about global climate change doesn't mesh with reality. Assuming the "jury" is the thousands of scientists worldwide appointed to the UN's International Panel on Climate Change, the jury is very much in, and the verdict is that climate change is real. According to NASA, Jan. to July, 2010 is the hottest year ever recorded. July was in a three-way tie for the hottest of that month ever recorded, and all signs point to 2010 being the hottest year ever, overtaking 2005. It doesn't take much to understand that by dumping millions of years of stored carbon into our atmosphere in a few decades, the levels of CO2 will increase. This is already having a disastrous effect on temperatures, rainfall, and storms; causing droughts in some places and floods in others. His position of "allowing the marketplace to solve the problem" is exactly what caused the problem in the first place. We elect leaders to deal with the harsh realities and build a better future, not to ignore facts and condemn future generations.

The science could not be any clearer, and that any person wanting to serve the public would question it is both depressing and frightening.

How's the neo-inquisition going for you?

  3. Looks like I was right.

Imagine what the margin of defeat for Pat would have been without the coordinated GOTV effort.
