Maybe “career politician” is a subjective label but I think you need to be holding office for 10+ years before I’d call someone that.

He ran unsuccessfully for a 6-year term in Senate and a 4-year term as president, and he’s now running for prez again. That gives him 14 in the wannabe department! 😀
Seriously, since 2002, what else has he done? He ran for Governor; he won; he ran for president; he lost; he started running for president again. And he joyfully admits to having been “unemployed” since leaving the State House. Looks to me like he’s been a professional candidate/pol since 2002.

but I would delineate him differently than the likes of John Kerry, John Boehner, Barney Frank, Mitch McConnell… all career politicians who have been part of the problem for the last few decades continuously IN elected offices. Big difference!
Career – an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.
