So I’m reading Saturday’s Globe when I came this this close (holding my index finger about a hair from my thumb) to falling off the john after seeing quotes from Sal DiMasi’s wing man Jay Kaufman.
“I was slow to recognize Sal’s shortcomings,’’ said state Representative Jay Kaufman, a Lexington Democrat and onetime DiMasi ally. “I guess I erred on the side of trusting him.’’
Let me tell you about Jay Kaufman. He has been Mr. Good Government/Mr. Process since he first drove down Rt. 2 from Lexington and walked in the building. Just ask him. He the most ethical guy in the building. So when Tom Finneran was running the show Jay called him on everything. When Finneran farted Jay screamed at him for contributing to global warming. [IMHO, this is one of the finest sentences ever posted on BMG. 😀 -ed.]
The came Sal. Finneran’s hand picked successor. It was meant to be. While people like me were wondering how long before Sal got taken away in hand-cuffs (seriously, nobody is surprised) Jay got a chairmanship and started praising Sal like a teenage cheerleader. Sal was the quarterback and Jay his girlfriend.
Then, after the Globe started printing stories about Sal and Cognos, Sal and the ticket scalpers, Sal and Jay Cashman’s multi-mullion dollar legislation, and Sal’s wife getting paid by Cashman to appear on a a fake TV show, it became pretty obvious that Sal was playing games. It also became obvious to the feds and the heat was on. Members panicked. But lemmings being lemmings they went along with Mariano and Petro and others and re-elected Sal. Kaufman nominated him to be Speaker .
That’s right. Chairman Kaufman, the ultra good government man, the process man, the left of left limousine liberal from Lexington nominated Sal DiMasi to his second term as speaker. If one was to look back at this time they will see Jay Kaufman’s name in the media more than any other’s defending Sal. He was like Al Cowlings helping O.J. when everyone else was backing away.
Two weeks later Sal resigned in disgrace and was soon indicted.
You see ladies and gentlemen Jay Kaufman is the choice of the Boston Globe to be the next Speaker. Jay can taste it. Too bad for him there’s at most 20 other reps that will back him.
But that’s not my point. My point is Jay is the poster child of a fraud. He got drunk with power under Sal and showed his true colors.
Of course Sal used him. “Jay, go talk to your friends, will ya?” Jay would then hit the friendly liberal media circuit preaching the values of Saint Sal Dimasi. Then he would return to he State House and park in is new space, go to his new big office, talk to his new big staff, and return calls to his new big important friends.
Hey Jay, your quote in the Globe is all that is needed to prove you do not have the leadership abilities to succeed as speaker. Plus you wear turtlenecks.
First the late great WBCN is shut down to make room for the new sports station. Ahh, the memories. The history. It was fun listening to the end of life celebration they ran prior to pulling the plug. And now MIke-FM. Closing shop so WEEI can broadcast in its place. Ahh the memories. Mike-FM. They played everything. So many stories over the years. And the personalities. My goodness.
MIke FM. Just like BCN, there will never be another like it.
Who’s going to run against Mayor Menino in three years?
Right now we the voters, not the activists, who want an alternative to Scott Brown are being told not to worry. We are being told that they have the winning person. We as voters cannot see her. Cannot touch her. Cannot speak to her. Only the very limited tid bits her controllers want to share.
Now a little behind the scenes practice time is well and fine. In fact it’s a necessity. But this is over the top. Voters do not want to be told what to do. A huge turn-off. Right now Elizabeth Warren is helping to create the image of a Frankenstein constructed by the Harvard elite in a laboratory somewhere in Cambridge. A few people who claim to know what’s best have caused the political world to come to a stop while a complete unknown makes up her mind. All because the few have anointed her.
Are you listening Deval.
On the other hand Warren could be another Sean McDonogh. McDonough was just out of Syracuse University a year or two when he got the Sox play by play gig. He looked 50 but was in his mid 20s. “Hey! Wait a minute” the masses yelled. “Who the hell is he?” Other than he’s Will McDonough’s kid and the sports writer is close friend of fellow South Boston native and Channel 38 general manager Dan Berkery. The fix was in.
But wait. After the first batter of the first inning of the first exhibition game New Englanders relaxed. This kid could not only handle the job but he was good. Real good.
Of course BMgers know the rest of the story.
Larry Lucchino and his friends bought the team. Will McDonough wrote that they were frauds. Soon after Will McDonough was dead. (That’s why I need to be anonymous) Sean was canned and replaced by Don Orsillo, the guy that sounds exactly like him.
McDonough has national gigs now.
Alright. Time to make some money. The new casinos coming should provide opportunities for the capitalists out there. OK here’s where the dough is. High end prostitution plus cocaine and marijuana distribution. No casino can be without that stuff nearby. We’ll have to get an apartment to work out of.
The hookers will be out-call only. Probably something in a three decker in East Boston, Revere, Chelsea, or perhaps Winthrop. Only a stones throw from Orient Heights. We can always get a place at the “upscale” apartments behind Northgate Plaza on 1A. But with all the strippers that will be moving in their rents will probably go sky high.
We also going to have to team up with a limo service. Perhaps start our own. No better place to pimp and push narcotics than a limo. Tough to get the casino workers to bird dog for you. They are being watched. Nope. Cab and limo drivers are where we will concentrate our marketing money.
Hey, Dan’s Winslow is a good sport. Probably not a bad guy to get drunk with. A little crazy. Nothing wrong with that. I bring this up because summer is over and time to continue our ethics debate. I’m not up for it now other than to say that giving up elected power or influence or the right to be heard to non-elected officials is bad at every level. The federal budget power committee is elected officlas giving up power to others and that is looked upon unfavorable.
Because Sal chose to use his influence to illegally make money should not result in the prohibition of legislators from using their influence to help the district. If we do that then the list is never ending and suddenly we find ourselves with a government of unknown and guarded bureaucrats making decisions in secret.
Winslow’s solution is is a Pontus Pilot wash your hands of it type of thing. Not the way to go.
Okay. Who is the idiot that places the bus stop sign immediately in front of the cross walk? Or is it the moron that paints that crosswalk directly in front of the bus stop? Either way it pisses me off. Should I stop? WTF?
David Wedge really gets my ass. No wonder the guy is always being sued. I hear him on Emily Rooney the other day opining that guys in jail now don’t have the benefit of having a wife with a sad story like Sal does. Huh? Evidently our experienced street smart politcal/crime reporter David Wedge has never sat through a sentencing or a bail hearing. It all comes out. The lawyer makes sure of it. Even the court appointed lawyer. This is true for the car thief to the murderer.
Then of course I hear these journalists wondering whether Sal will be allowed to stay free pending appeal. You think one of these professionals would dug a little. Sal was convicted on two or three very solid counts for which he cannot win on appeal. The one count he may win on appeal is the “honest services” one. Even if he prevals on that count he still goes away on the others. Thus no reason for stay of sentence.
