NH primary ballot set

Today at the close of business was the deadline for filing for candidacy for President of the United States in New Hampshire. Apparently all you need is a spare $1000 to get on the ballot. So the Globe is getting a big build-up for the soon to be printed Globe Spotlight series on jury waived OUI trials. I expect this to be a big bore to everyone but those who have no clue how a district court works. Let me explain. A busy court like Hingham and Plymouth have many many criminal cases on the docket including OUIs. Now I don’t want to disappoint the naive masses that sit in their homes and complain about what a mess the world is, but many people arrested are not guilty. I’m not saying that didn’t do it, I’m saying it is highly doubtful theCommonwealth can prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. This happens with many many cases. Including many OUIs. Now you must understand that jury trials suck. They take up a courtroom for at least a day. It can take a morning or longer to impanel the six jurors then the trial proceeds at much slower pace than a bench trial. It usually takes a day and a half to do a jury trial.
