Dan “The Man” Kennedy. Let me first recap.
Tom Scholz of the band Boston is suing the Herald because it wrote that lead singer Brad Delp killed himself do to Scholtz always being jerk. The Herald quoted Delp’s ex-wife. Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa, The Inside Track Gals, then wrote as fact that recent developments between Sholtz and Delp was “the last straw” resulting in the suicide.
What has gone unreported in the Herald’s version of events is that two weeks before his suicide it was discovered that Delp secretly placed a video cam in his fiancee’s bedroom.
The arts reporter for the Globe (who btw, seems to be one of the few over there that gets it) examined all the court documents and reported these facts.
The Herald shot back and is now disputing the cause of the suicide saying they can say it because they believe it.
Dan Kennedy jumped on board with the Herald by saying libel suits have “many twists and turns” and quoted the fiancee’s sister, the victim of the video tape, saying Scholz caused Delp’s depression which “manifested” itself in Delp secretly video taping all her private moments.
Today Dan follows up with another gem. After summarizing a story in the Herald that attacked the Globe for because not mentioning the victim’s opinion that Scholz caused Delp to perv on her Kennedy, the journalism professor/ethics guru teaching kids paying close to $50,000 tuition, has this to say:
Dwinell also writes a sidebar noting that Edgers appeared on television to discuss the case in February 2011 and, according to Dwinell, “seemed to endorse Scholz’s claims against the Herald.”
Since Edgers’ journalistic integrity is now being questioned, I should note that I worked with him at the Boston Phoenix some years back and considered him to be a good, reliable reporter. I now work with his wife, Carlene Hempel, at Northeastern.
Dwinell does not dispute the accuracy of Edgers’ reporting on court documents regarding the hidden-camera incident. And Edgers himself noted on Sunday that Sullivan believed Scholz had contributed to the depression that caused Delp to engage in such behavior.
As I wrote two days ago, “Libel suits contain many twists and turns.” The only thing we can be sure of is that if this ever goes to court, it’s going to be one hell of a trial.
Does everyone see the game here? Hey Dan, are you bothered by the Herald’s over-the-top use of selected facts? It doesn’t seem you are.
You do seem a bit annoyed that the arts reported didn’t mention the victim’s opinion of what drove him to do it.
WTF Dan. Do I have to go on here and come with witty lines and analogies (okay rarely witty, usually barely passable) to explain the myopia, or closed eyes, you have when reporting on reporters.
Ask you this Dan: are you using this case in your class lectures/assigned reading. If so what points from are you emphasizing and what would you like your students to learn from it?
You like the sneaky hit he does on the Globe reporter by questioning his integrity by defending it. Dan, where the hell is the journalistic integrity of the Herald. I don’t see you calling it into question.
I thought “journalists” report facts. This case is about selected facts. Not what caused Delp to do it.
p.s. Isn’t charley a dick?

Your other Delp-Scholz post is still there, and still just as weak. This one isn’t any better. I don’t come here for the celebrity scandal du jour, even if it is the renowned journalist eb3 serving it up.

Ern’s got More Than a Feeling here. Even if you have no Peace of Mind. However, I have no freakin’ idea what he’s talking about. Does Spark Notes do a version of this?
