On Tuesday, the Dartmouth Democratic Town Committee voted to endorse Congressman Bill Keating in his re-election campaign for the new 9^th  District of Massachusetts.  As chairman of the committee, I wanted to inform the community why we are supporting Congressman Keating.

A quick look at his strong record of work for his current district highlights the Congressman’s commitment to the residents he serves and towns he represents.  Since coming to office, he was instrumental in bringing 10,000 new jobs to the South Shore.  He remains dedicated to spurring job creation in the 9th district and residents of the South Coast should know that the Congressman is a strong supporter of Cape Wind and the new jobs that will come to the New Bedford terminal through that project.  He also has the support of unions and union workers across the district and state thanks to his job creation efforts.

Congressman Keating has also demonstrated a keen understanding of industries centered in Southeastern Massachusetts.  He currently sits on a subcommittee that directly affects our agricultural, aquacultural, and energy industries – the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade of the House’s Small Business Committee.  Congressman Keating established the first Federal Fishing Advisory Board to address the needs of our fishermen throughout the state.  He is also the co-founder of the first-ever Congressional Cranberry Caucus, which works solely to promote our local cranberry farmers.  Further, Congressman Keating has been a vocal supporter of increased research and development in the fields of renewable energy and maritime technologies.  On this issue, he has partnered numerous times with our own UMass Dartmouth.

Since meeting Congressman Keating earlier this year, I have come to realize not only how hard he works for his current residents, but how hard he wants to work for the South Coast.  He is taking the time to shake every hand and attend every meeting so that when he goes back to Washington, he is informed about what our communities need.  My fellow committee members and I were moved by his dedication and genuine interest in the South Coast.  That is why the Dartmouth DTC endorsed him, and why I am endorsing him personally.

Congressman Barney Frank and Rep. Chris Markey, who have both endorsed him, have stated on numerous occasions that Congressman Bill Keating is the right choice for the South Coast and we completely agree.
