Republicans flailing in surreality-based sea

The Republicans really have got to up their game or this election is going to get away from them. Romney supporter Republican Representative Jason Chaffetz was absolutely destroyed on Friday, again by Soledad O’Brien on CNN.

His key mistake was to deny that the Ryan-Romney plan for Medicare replaces coverage for treatments with a voucher plan to buy private insurance, when that is exactly what it does. The NYT, as David discussed, has more detail here.

A second important mistake was to fail to acknowledge that he and the rest of the House Republicans voted to strip hundreds of billions from Medicare, when their votes are a matter of record.

The basic problem is that just like John McCain, Romney chose a charismatic ideologue to boost his far-right credentials. Ryan’s positions are now defining the national campaign, just as Palin’s did on everything from Russian foreign policy to the best newspapers for a president to read.

  1. A literal (water-based) sea will do in a pinch:

    ————————————————-
EXCLUSIVE: The FBI probed a late-night swim in the Sea of Galilee that involved drinking, numerous GOP freshmen lawmakers, top leadership staff – and one nude member of Congress, according to more than a dozen sources, including eyewitnesses.

During a fact-finding congressional trip to the Holy Land last summer, Rep. Kevin Yoder (Kansas) took off his clothes and jumped into the sea, joining a number of members, their families and GOP staff after a night of drinking in Israel, the sources told POLITICO. Other participants, including the daughter of another congressman, swam fully clothed while some lawmakers partially disrobed. In a Sunday night statement to POLITICO, Yoder admitted he went skinny-dipping and apologized for any “embarrassment” he’s caused for his colleagues and constituents.
