Kerry Healey managing Romney foreign policy

From the Republican party that brought you George W. Bush and Iraqi WMDs comes a flailing effort to present Mitt Romney as a competent world leader. BMG readers probably learn all they need to in this line from the NYT:

The foreign policy group is overseen by Kerry Healey, who served as lieutenant governor under Mr. Romney in Massachusetts.

The GOP appears to be collapsing before our eyes into a rag-tag collection of nativists, birthers, and “as you can see, she’s not” quack ethnologists. Kerry Healey may be a lot of things — “you’ll be raped in a garage” attack ad aficionado, Beverly millionaire, a leader of Massachusetts’ “angry 13%” — but to the best of my knowledge she has no foreign policy expertise that warrants putting her in such a role (hat tip, Rob Eno, who reminded me of her work helping to train women attorneys in Afghanistan). She did go to school in Ireland. Maybe someone can explain the Romney campaign’s thinking in the comments.

  1. Kerry Healey went to school in Ireland?!

Funny, Barack Obama went to school in Indonesia and that is considered a negative!:(

  2. I think you're being

unfair to Kerry Healey. Aside from her leadership as lieutenant governor, she wrote some white papers once, and her husband once bought her the chairmanship of the Mass GOP.

    • That's right!

With Sean’s money she was instantly more qualified than Scott Brown who was passed over by Mitt Romney for the job of perpetual campaign financier……I mean LG.

  3. Healey knows more about Foreign Policy than Romney?

That’s not really all that hard to believe.

    • But wait -

Isn’t all of Romney’s money in foreign countries? Didn’t he make a lot of that money sending jobs to foreign countries? Surely that gives him a lot of expertise.

      • Two comments

Its to shore up his base which is suspicious on elite expertise on any topic and certainly suspicious of looking beyond America’s shores for any kind of foreign policy advice or policy model to follow.

That said my dad was incredibly confident in the foreign policy team of the last President “Well he definitely a dummy, but at least Dick, Rummy and Powell will be a good team to help him out”-fewer infamous predictions have come out of his month before or since and to this day he remembers that conversation and regrets his reasoning. And Obama had very little foreign policy experience and has been one of the best foreign policy Presidents since the first Bush, Nixon or Ike. In the long run it will be interesting to see the GOP surrender its traditional advantage on foreign affairs and security issues, especially after its economic advantage will erode when the recovery is allowed to take place.

        • "one of the best foreign policy Presidents"?

Opinions vary. I don’t recall Ike or Bush the First blowing up wedding parties and funerals. That shit isn’t helping our image with the world; it looks to them like an extension of Mad Cowboy disease, and it makes everybody reluctant to sign on to our programs.

If you didn’t live through Nixon and “Peace is at hand,” don’t even talk to me about his foreign policy.

      • We're all set if the Cayman

        Islands attack!
