Illinois finally joined the 21st century today, by allowing their citizens the right to defend themselves from evildoers, and passing a concealed-carry law. Better late, than never, I suppose. Deval and Obama must be proud of their home state of Illinois, hopefully this begins to stem the violence Chicago has endured these past years.
From what I have read, the Democrats in Illinois did a decent job with their new law, by bypassing the police chiefs, and allowing anyone to conceal-carry a firearm who passes a background check and 16 hours of safety classes. One must pay $150 for the permit, but that is well worth the security and peace of mind that comes with the ability to defend yourself. 300,000 permits are expected in the first year alone. I do hope that $150 fee is on a sliding scale. IMO, those living at or near the poverty level, should have that fee waived.
“Lawmakers had little appetite for fiddling any further with the legislation on the deadline day the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had set for ending what it said was an unconstitutional ban on carrying concealed weapons”.

The herd mentality that exists by many here. If folks don’t get their spoon-fed answers by the politicians, they stomp their feet and demand purity . Talk about unhealthy?

I’m serious. It’s not healthy Dan.

I completely disagree with the premise, but it seems if you really think arming everyone prevents crime you would want the gun very UNconcealed so as to send the message, “Don’t even think about it” to a would-be assailant.
danfromwaltham says
Thats what open-carry reminds me of. I have seen people open-carry in Arizona, but not for me.
I never said “everyone” should own a firearm, but more people need to realize the police show up after the crime is committed. My heart breaks at reading the crime statistics of the number of rapes and sexual assaults in our country. Most here are advocates for the wrong kind of “protection” for women. The real “war on women” are those who are victims of sexual assaults. Women don’t need free contraception, they need the right to conceal-carry.
doubleman says
It always works out like that with people defending themselves with guns.
Can you at least try to base your arguments on some evidence?
danfromwaltham says
What roll of the dice would you rather have?
There are countless stories of women defending themselves with a firearm, from would be assailants, protecting themselves and their children. If the bar is something must work 100% of the time, that is a high hurdle very few products or programs can clear.
““Every 2 minutes, a woman is sexually assaulted in the U.S. There are 207,754 victims of sexual assault each year. Eighty percent are under the age of 30,” she says, citing statistics from the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, or RAINN. “That’s a lot of women walking around who are targets. They’re talking on their cellphones or texting, totally unaware of what’s going on. It’s part of the reason why people get themselves into trouble.”

HR's Kevin says
There are actually very few.
Yes, a lot of people are victims of crimes in this country. However, it is not at all clear that having more people walking around with guns does much to make people safer.
I also don’t understand why you chose that quote. Do you think someone who is talking on their cellphone and is oblivious to their surroundings is going to fend off an attacker even if they have a gun in their handbag? That makes absolutely no sense.
I wish you would think a bit more instead of mindlessly cutting and pasting crap from the internet.
danfromwaltham says
The person I quoted is Paxton Quigley. She is no dummie, has written 4 books and trained over 7,000 women on how to use a gun. She described herself as the following:
“It would be nice to live in a world of utopia, but that’s not the case. I’m a liberal. I’m pro-choice. I’ve never voted for a Republican. I just believe guns protect women”.
Funny you mention handbag, she designed one with a holster. There are clothing undergarments that can be worn that hold a firearm as well, but
I doubt one could wear skinny jeans.
You must agree women need to be extra careful, no? Women should not be consumed with their IPhone or Facebook when out on the town, there are predators out there and women are the primary target of dirtbags.
Please read the link, very interesting and sad about her friend being raped even though she called the cops as the break-in happened. The police took 20 minutes to arrive, and her friend was already raped.
I don’t have all the answers, but I like what Paxton is doing.
HR's Kevin says
All you ever do is simply cut and paste quotes from other people. I totally believe that there are people how believe that guns will make everyone safer, and I am sure you can come up with individual examples where it has worked out that way, but you can also come up with examples where
people’s guns have been used against them or where the presence of a gun turned a domestic dispute into a murder. It is pretty pointless to argue policy based on anecdote. It’s too bad that is your primary mode of argument.
I also don’t see how a story about someone getting raped by someone who broke into her house is even remotely relevant to the issue of carry permits. But that is pretty much par for the course for you.
danfromwaltham says
Saying I don’t really know anything and all I do is cut and paste, hurt the most, so congratulations.
I spend time putting these posts and my comments together, along with sources and links. I bet few, if any, knew about the change in the Illinois gun law. I am sure even less knew oil cars are traveling through Massachusetts. Yet, I am the one who doesn’t know much of anything.
I need to think long and hard about continuing to being part of this community.

As I’ve argued before, DFW argues the way they argue on TV. On TV anecdotes are stirring. They work very well. They’re convincing.
Here, in the land of the written word, you and I are aware that salient anecdotes can hide a world of contrary data. Obvious, no? But you are simply not going to convince DFW of that. You might as well be arguing with what Mattel’s Chatty Cathy doll says when you pull on her string.
It’s just as effective and just as ridiculous.
Only here, you’re feeding someone’s acute need for attention.
Christopher says
We’re supposedly saving lives. I of course don’t want any guns carried in public except by police.

Seriously.
And if you need to be “inspired” to respond to questions about guns, go to RedState, pick something and respond to it. In a diary. It’s not hard. There’s plenty to choose from. Try this:

It’s a beautifully provocative post. Or this one full of citations:

Here’s a pile of statistics and data that the other side thinks proves their point. Do they make any good points?
http://www.goal.org/truthfulstatspages/truthfulstats.html
There is simply no need whatever to respond to DFW. He’s not the most articulate conservative around. He is not the most provocative. He is not the most widely read. He is not the most interesting conservative. By engaging actual conservatives, you know ones that don’t need to wear protection on their knuckles when they walk, you can actually learn something.
danfromwaltham says
I did not know your are the arbiter of all things “provocative”, “most read” on BMG, “articulate” and “interesting”. I am deeply apologetic for not meeting your impossible high standards. If I had served 2-3 years on Medicaire fraud, or other relatable offenses, would that make me more “interesting” in your eyes?
I admit, I am no Bill Kristol or Bill Bennett or even Ron Paul or Bill Weld. I don’t have a degree from Harvard Univ, but I do want to tax their asses though.. The only knuckle-draggers here are those who rail against diversity of opinions, attempting to launch boycotts and censor a particular individual.

Not now. Not ever.

Remember Richel Navo? He was a Domino’s delivery man who was lured by 3 suspects into a Hyde apart home, was robbed and fatally stabbed. Mr. Navo was just trying to make a living, and left behind a loving family. I know hindsight is 20/20, but don’t you wish after being lured by the criminals, he had a firearm? Could it have turned out any worse than it did?
While I understand your preference of just cops carrying guns in public, I don’t trust the honors system that everyone will behave, and the only time someone will rob me is if they break into my home, where I gave the green light to defend myself, the family, and my dogs (unless we can hide in the closet or jump out a window and run away). Especially women, my goodness, look at the assault stats against women, how do we get that to near zero?
I believe I proved in England, where they have a total gun ban, assaults are double that than in the US on a per capita basis, so we know that doesn’t work.

Eventually he will go haunt his local Patch site (or RedMassGroup) and leave us alone, as long as we don’t give him the attention he craves.
