We aren’t even past the midterms, and she’s declaring a non-candidacy for 2016. I can’t recall someone doing that earlier.

The Clinton’s have a huge early start in that important area and have frozen Democratic donors who are waiting for Hillary to make a move. Those that were inclined to donate to Warren were likewise waiting for her. This signals to those donors, unlikely to back Clinton, that they can chase another great left hope without waiting for Liz.

There is intense interest in anything that involves Elizabeth Warren. So, whenever a news reporter writes a story about her, that story will make it to the front page. That’s why Joe Battenfield wrote this stupid story about Senator Warren. He knows that people will read his article!
I suspect that it won’t be long before the Globe prints a similar stupid story.

Specifically Chris Cillizza, who tweeted it breathlessly as it was happening.

Elizabeth Warren is brilliant while Chris Cillizza is an idiot.
I myself have not ruled out running for Library Trustee. I will need the signature of oceandreams and fourteen (14) other Framingham voters, but I have yet to pull papers. Being Trustee will not pay me. It is an elected volunteer position. The election comes April next year. I have started to sketch out my vision for service, but will not buy a web site domain name before this year ends.
I am running to take my townsfolk (paisani) securely into the twenty-first century. I want downtown Framingham to be a part of the Knowledge Economy.
I want our public library to coordinate with our Framingham bookstores, so that people keep buying bound books even as we carry our mobile devices.
If budget permits, different genres of books may be bought by our library, but I will prioritize the purchase of science (especially computational) college and high school textbooks. I will make the Framingham Public Library buy the Princeton Edition of Einstein’s writings as well as Paul Tipler’s Physics texts rather than acquiring fiction titles, if there is not money for both science reality books and fiction novels.
Anyway, I have to wash dishes now. brb

… then Senator Warren and her people need to learn a little more about the semantics of politics.
“I am not running” – in political circles – simply is *not* definitive. To insiders, that just means “I haven’t firmly decided to run, so I’m not subject to the FEC rules that would apply if I made that decision.” Meanwhile, “I plan to serve out my term” is less definitive than that.
The phrases to use are:
“I will not run for President in 2016.”
“I will serve out my term.”
She says those and the speculation is over. I suspect Senator Warren and her people know these realities. Their failure to use these actually absolute phrases is either gross incompetence or, most likely, an attempt to keep her options open.
Sorry, David, but politics isn’t beanbags and words are important.

It’s time to stop acting silly about this issue.

I agree that “I pledge to serve out my term” is much better and is definitive. It’s even a tad stronger than “I will serve out my term.” I hadn’t really made note of that follow-up statement.
I do still think that the first statement (“I’m not running for president and I plan to serve out my term.”) was very poorly worded. When one is taking about one’s plans for the future, the words need to be in the future tense. The present tense phrase “I’m not running” is classic political double-speak and much less definitive than “I will not run.”

She’s been clear and definitive every time anybody asked. Her staff has also been clear and definitive. This non-story is simply an invention by incompetent reporters.

“No, no, no, no,” Warren said. When a reporter asked her if that was a “definite no,” she responded like this: “No, no, no, no, no.” (Notice the extra “no.”) The other posters are right, the media will do whatever they can to keep these stories going even if “no” means there’s “wiggle room.”

Is she running for president? No.
Am I eating dinner? No.
She “would” pledge to fill out her term. Did she? And what does that mean — who has ever lost election to the presidency for breaking that type of pledge.
Someone with as firm a grasp of the language as Senator Warren knows what to say to stop the speculation and isn’t saying it.
JimCsays
I think she made the right call.

I agree, more or less, with those saying that she could have made a Sherman statement (“If drafted I will not run” etc.), but if her people are savvy enough to know that, then they’re also savvy enough to know that speculation is useful. If you’re being watched closely, sometimes you can get more done.

“I will serve out my full term as junior Senator from Illinois and have no intention of pursuing the presidency in 2008”-Sen. Obama on Meet the Press. Tim Russert later called him out and said that his view “evolved” after all the support he got asking for a run. This was not a done deal. I do believe now that she won’t run though. I guess Sanders in the primary and Clinton in the general for me!

Assuming you are refering to the Senator from Vermont, he would have to become a Democrat first, which would be preferable to running on the Socialist line.
