Might as well end the year with a nice chuckle. Appears Gilligan and Skipper drove their version of the S.S. Minnow and crew of 70 passengers into the Antarctic, hoping to document global warming evidence and its impact. Not only did their ship get stuck due to the thick ice, but a Chinese ice-breaking ship got stuck attempting to rescue the scientists and their passengers. The only solution appears to be rescue by helicopter.
After the Titanic sank, rules changed requiring adequate life boats to save all the passengers in the event of a accident. I would pass another rule, that whenever a vessel wants to travel to Antarctica or the North Pole in hopes of videotaping an icicle melting or some animal clinging to a patch of ice, that sled dogs are onboard to pull the crew and passengers to safety, instead of risking the lives of pilots to save their butts.

The big climate change hoax
Insidious…and dumb

I don’t know why he is so anti-environment to the point that he sees burning coal as a positive good. I don’t think even the Koch Brothers spend their days dreaming up ways to harm the environment just because they can. For them it’s about profit, but what’s Dan’s excuse?

To get under liberal skins. And his project is clearly working based on all the precious time and energy wasted in his posts. Just stop responding people and the monster will go away!

My last comment here before December 30th was on July 26th. DFW was here then and he is here now. He is not going away on his own.

So yes, I find the whole thing hilarious. Geez, don’t these people know its cold down there! Be like walking in the middle of Alaska with no gun and being amazed at seeing a grizzly bear sizing you up for lunch.
To Demintfan, I wouldn’t use the word “hoax”, instead, hype, drama, and overrated would be my take on climate change/global warming thing.
SomervilleTom says
The “climate change/global warming thing” is, if anything, UNDER stated.
Your use of words like “hype”, “drama” and “overrated” to characterize it in this context demonstrates pure unadulterated ignorance. It is precisely because of this kind of woefully distorted garbage that comments and diaries like this should be removed from this site.
I don’t believe the editors would allow a post that claimed that blacks were genetically predisposed to crime to remain on this site. I don’t believe a post that claimed that cigarette smoking was safe and that the association between lung cancer and cigarettes was a “hoax”, “drama” and “overrated” would remain.
When posts about issues of substance (and climate change certainly is an issue of substance) that are flagrantly, indisputably, factually, and often intentionally WRONG are offered — and those posts are flagged by the community as such — I think they should be removed. I join others here in being disturbed that a blog with the influence and visibility of BMG is being used to spread rubbish like this (as well as the 2% “tax” fiasco).
One last time: anthropogenic climate change CAUSES some regions to get more snow. Warmer air holds MORE moisture than colder air. CO2 CAUSES warming. The concentration of atmospheric CO2 is increasing DRAMATICALLY, and that increase is almost all anthropogenic.
These are FACTS. They simply ARE. A statement that claims otherwise is as ludicrous as a statement that heavier objects fall faster than light ones, that the Sun revolves around the Earth, or that the Earth is 6,000 years old. There is an abundance of sites on the web that welcome and encourage cranks, crackpots, and crazies in addition to climate change deniers. I hope that BMG is not one of them.
I’m happy to continue pursuing the essential debate about how immediate the effects of climate change are likely to be, what steps we as a first-world nation should be taking regarding climate change, and similar matters of substance.
This kind of drivel does NOT meet that standard.
geoffm33 says
This should be quoted or linked above the diary if this diary is to remain.
danfromwaltham says
I say it is. You, on the other hand, compare me to racist who would believe Blacks are genetically inferior, or cigarettes are good for people, and gotta throw the “denier” word in there, right Tom? All for telling Demintfan my own personal opinion. Who said on BMG Steve Lynch’s congressional district will be under water in 50 years? Who was that? I believe I mocked that statement too. That type of discourse was hurled at Republicans who railed against Obamacare in 2009, remember?
I am sure you are correct with the CO2 formula + clouds = more snow. But then I read from others how global temps are stagnant because all the CO2 is in the oceans, causing extra-strength hurricanes and I guess, extra thick ice at the polar caps.
So as we can see from this diary, Al Gore and those who believed him and his BS, perhaps these scientists, are now stuck in ice so think, their boat can’t move, two rescue boats can’t cut through the thick ice, and now, the only ship capable of cutting through this Arctic ice, is a Russian vessel that is 28 days away from the area.
So last night as I ate lobster and drank wine with friends, I asked everyone (to tweak my Democrat friend and his wife) that we remember those stuck in the Artctic ice looking for global warming as they eat chiclets, and await rescue from a Chinese helicopter (gee, I wonder where it’s made) that looks like a Tonka Toy. But looking at the photos, everyone is smiling. If the pipes freeze and they lose plumbing, I guess the poop deck has new meaning, no?
But in all seriousness, the people who chartered this boat for their reserach and beliefs are grossly irresponsible, especially if people get hurt. This reminds me of the guy who thought he, and only he, could live with grizzly bears, until one day, a bear decided to eat him and his girlfriend.

…but the hype is on your side of the aisle – Gore never said what you’re attributing to him. Read this:

Please stop shooting off your mouth with half-baked nonsense, it’s getting very, very tiresome.
danfromwaltham says
“Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years,” says Gore.
Gore said this while we were told cap and trade is a necessity to save
the planet. Of course, we know the opposite happened, so much ice in 2013, the Woolly mamoth may come back. I suggest Gore was over the top.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, you may be right, but I am just looking at things with a skeptical eye.

There is less Arctic sea ice:

This issue is not about Al Gore.
John Tehan says
Is it summer in the arctic right now, Dan? Do you have two brain cells keeping each other company inside your head, or is it completely empty in there?
Christopher says
…the original story is about the Antarctic, where it is in fact currently summer.
danfromwaltham says
And I wrote a diary a few months ago how abysmally wrong Al Gore and the prognosticators were wrong, noting how the Arctic ice sheet expanded dramatically this year.
The title of my diary was ‘Global warming models crash and burn, IPCC dials back on prior predictions’. It’s in there, I think.
Christopher says
I think Al Gore by and large knows what he is talking about on this. He has been internationally recognized for his advocacy.
John Tehan says
Go look at pictures of the Arctic ice cap from this past summer and note how much of it had disappeared by Autumn. Go read what Al Gore actually said, and try to understand the words. Try to realize the difference between “Al Gore said the ice would be gone” and “Some models suggest…”.
Go somewhere else and peddle your lies over there – I challenge you now to write a diary asking for 24 regular contributors to this site to vote to keep you. If you’re successful, I’ll shut up and tolerate your presence, but if 24 people don’t show up to keep you on this island, you’ll leave and not come back.
SomervilleTom says
This lie (about the claimed expansion of Arctic ice) has been refuted over and over. It is PURE HORSE MANURE.
The Arctic ice cap is vanishing, and is doing so FASTER than predicted when Al Gore made the CORRECT assertion you continue to lie about.
John Tehan says
Chris, Dan’s quote from Gore is about the Arctic ice cap, where it is presently winter – Gore said nothing about Antartica – it’s fair to say that you and he are now sharing an empty head.
kirth says
This gormless post is launched from a story about Antarctica, yet the perpetrator is using it as an excuse to bash Gore for his statements about the Arctic.
I really do not see the value in entertaining this person on the site. He does not debate honestly. The opinions he expresses are often not his own. Facts are incidental and irrelevant to his arguments. Please – give us a break.
SomervilleTom says
“I say it is”?
More rubbish. Arctic ice is vanishing, as predicted. I have no clue what you’re flaming about with CO2. None — your comment is utterly divorced from reality.
I used the word “denier” in response to your words here. I stand by it.
petr says
I was just about to post when I noted that johnt001 beat me too it. I’ll re-iterate, lest you think it just he…
Al Gore never once said that ALL ice would be gone in 5 years. Indeed NOBODY has said anything remotely like that. Al Gore quoted a study that postulated that ice would retreat into winter months only and “autumn would be ice free” sometime between 2011 and 2016. Certainly less immediately dire than “all” ice but no less stunning when you think that winter month are getting shorter and warmer.
If you lived a hundred years ago, I can most assuredly imagine you refusing any and all scientific evidence, common sense or indeed reality to defend the notion that Black people are genetically inferior. Ditto for cigarettes. You use the same inchoate gestures at opaque and twisted logic all the while displaying a willful denial of clear and transparent logic. You had your chance to deny this, but you chose not to.
So, yeah, you are not, in the least, different from those past deniers. Stupid is as stupid does.
kbusch says
So it’s all about Al Gore.
Because that’s how the inane think about this stuff.
kbusch says
I’m sure it would be another matter entirely.
