I read an article on the Waltham wickedlocal and some interesting stuff on Martha Coakley. She is proposing expanding pre-k programs and assist districts who would like to expand the school hours, both I would support. As to paying for the programs, higher taxes did NOT come out of her mouth, Ms. Coakley said there are enuff monies in the existing budget (ie. cut the existing waste) to pay for her ambitious plans. Coakley said “I think there a probably some things in the state that we pay for that may not be as important.” Wow, isn’t that amazing? Finally, someone is awake up in Beacon Hill but I hope this thinking isn’t shunned by those who may call it “Democratic positions of the past”…
I believe Coakley channeled a little Rand Paul when it came to our funding of the prison system. “Pointing out that non-violent criminals and drug dealers will eventually be released to the streets, Coakley questioned the “large, mandatory minimum sentences” imposed on drug offenders. “For those non-violent offenders who, in some instances, we have been warehousing, we need to have a better solution. Instead of paying $40,000 or $50,000 a year, we should look at and we can look at and we will look early on in this administration at reallocating those dollars to those inmates or those with a record who want to get a GED, who want job training,”. Is this a “Mainstream Republican” position b/c I was accused of never straying from it by a BMG’er. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
Now for the whipped cream on top of your pancakes, Marcia did not give the typical reflexive Democrat response we are accustomed to, when asked if she supported chaining the gas tax to CPI. She wants to first talk to the business community and what impact there is if we put the gas tax on cruise control and allowing it to increase in perpetuity. Taxes will be used as a last resort, Coakley said.
Keep up the good work Martha. Just don’t let the extremist who are constantly waging war on cars, and those of us who have employer health insurance, bully you into changing your positions on taxes. Heck, you may get this unenrolled voters support in the Democratic Primary.

I do like Martha Coakley. She doesn’t seem to know how to or care to mince her words to please everyone, as many of the ones who do elected learn how to do eloquently. But that’s sort of why I like her. She’s real.

When it comes to taxation. And, she is not lying to me like Deval did when he promised me a property tax cut, which never came.
I think Martha is honest, she won’t BS the electorate. She basically stated government is too big with the wrong priorities in spending.
To BMG, So sorry for calling her Marcia initially, I made the same mistake as Patrick Kennedy did….Big deal.
