So according to Samsung they worked with the Red Sox and Big Papi in getting that selfi with the President for a Samsung marketing deal. That means John, Tom, and Larry got paid to set-up Obama.
Now that’s class. Real class.
These modern day P.T. Barnums confuse smarts with shamelessness.
It is however the perfect example when explaining one’s contempt for these carpetbagging fraudulent whores.

Doing his best Born Yesterday act, fakernie mounts his Steed of Outrage to report that two corporations colluded to take advantage of one of their achievements, to try and increase profits. The Horror!

Ortiz knew going to the White House that photos he took would be used as a Samsung mobile promotional item. Does that mean that Ortiz specifically took a “selfie” with Obama specifically for the purpose? No. But he shouldn’t have agreed to plan a White House visit as a production promotional opportunity in the first place.
How this has anything to do with the Red Sox organization as a whole. Nothing. Only in fake Ernie’s mind.
I wish this useless BS would stop.
JimC says
It means exactly that. What else could it possibly mean?
I take your larger point that this can’t be pinned on the team, but some of it can. Whatever access to the team Samsung had, the Sox knew, and they were in some sort of relationship.
Samsung ought to cut the crap. They had a role in the famous “Oscar selfie” too, and can you even imagine how many millions that would have cost them if they paid the actors in it for the their endorsement?
The picture is undoubtedly genuine. The President looks more excited than Ortiz does. And obviously, the President is fair game. But he should not be put in the position of having to deny he knew about the promotion in advance. Shame on Ortiz, shame on the Sox for whatever role they had, but most of all shame on Samsung. I guess I’ll be going iPhone when I finally buy a smartphone.

…to use the President’s likeness in marketing? It seems the President should not be put in the position of appearing to endorse a particular product.
mike_cote says
that the President has appeared on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show or between two ferns or Bill O’Rielly before the Superbowl or even the Sunday Morning Talking Heads Shows? This is often marketed as well.
Christopher says
I was afraid I would start seeing Samsung commercials where the message was the President uses Samsung and therefore you should too, as if it were a celebrity or athlete endorsement.

Wasn’t there something about the “invisible hand of the market” that what’s-his-face Reagan used to talk about all the time. I think we should let the market crush Samsung and be done with it.
fenway49 says
anyone would think the President smiling in a photo with someone constitutes endorsement of the phone used to take the photo. But there are legal claims available for right of publicity or misappropriation of likeness.
I imagine they won’t use it in an ad if he objects. But in this new frontier, they’ve already done the marketing with the press it’s generated.

… has officially objected.

I really don’t see how this issue helps advance our agenda on any front. I think all this Red Sox bashing is a distraction from important issues and makes us look petty. But that’s just me.
JimC says
But the owner of the Red Sox also owns the newspaper of record in town.
If we imagine that Patrick Purcell owned the Red Sox, do we think the Globe would cover the hiring issue Ernie raised in the other diary? Again that could be argued either way, but the Globe has historically jumped on discrimination stories.
So: corporate ownership of media, and discrimination. Progressive issues.
jconway says
How is this samsung controversy related to that?
JimC says
But you said “all this Red Sox bashing,” so I read your comment as referring to all the Red Sox diaries.
