Nice to see a family of means telling their kids they must work like the rest of society. “I think every kid needs to get a taste of what it’s like to do that real hard work,” Michelle Obama said in an interview with Parade magazine, slated to run on Sunday.
Clearly, the Obama’s are well grounded and I admire that about them. On this point, Barak and Michelle are role models for every family raising teenagers, especially wealthy families who may tend to inoculate their kids from having to work and just give them an allowance or their ATM card when they need cash. Did Chelsea Clinton ever work a minimum wage job or the Bush daughters? If they did not, that’s what contributes to elitism…
I recall my first job as a 16 year old and I worked any and all Saturdays when asked. Just this week, my daughter wanted to go to an amusement park with her friends and I said “absolutely not” since she was offered work hours today. I feel like a bad guy taking some fun time away on a beautiful Saturday, but my goal is for her to appreciate what we have done and provided her. I told her that at 16, working is not optional in getting through life, it’s a requirement.
She may not see it this way but if the Obama girls can work, so can she and every other teenager and able-bodied American, no excuses.
