The super PAC supporting Steve Grossman for Governor has come out with a new ad featuring Shirley Grossman, Steve’s 92-year old mother and one of the committee’s top donors. I’m biased as a Grossman supporter, but I think it’s the best ad I’ve seen for any statewide candidate this year. Much like Carl Sciortino’s famous ad with his dad, this one is amusing, endearing, and substantive.

I hoped for a bit better. I’m left with the impression that Shirley’s a hoot if you really get her going, but she’s a bit buttoned-down here. I have no idea what she’s really like, but that’s what I get.

I don’t think this ad compares favorably with Carl Sciortino’s ad with his father – that was so successful in part because it took excellent advantage of the fact that Carl and his dad don’t agree politically, which is something that a lot of people can identify with. There’s nothing like that in this one.

Comparing this to the Sciortino ad (which the poster and, really, the ad itself suggest), it comes off as a poor imitation. The missing Tea Party versus Massachusetts Liberal dynamic is a key difference. But I also think Sciotino’s is more successful because it is more cheerful, upbeat, and modern in both the writing and production. The ad opens and peaks with clever references to Sciortino being openly gay too which helps it flow better in to the policy pieces. And Sciortino being young and young looking also makes it work better. In contrast, to me, Grossman’s ad is much less interesting and feels less fun.

Moreover, the Sciortino ad, while a highpoint for MA political ads, still was only able to give him some greater name recognition and take him from 5th to a solid 3rd. Grossman (or Berwick) would need an ad to do magic at this point. This doesn’t. It would really need to be one of the best ads ever to matter.
It’s cute and pretty well done, but it won’t matter.
The ads that will matter will be Baker’s attack ads against Coakley. They could be brutal and devastating.

Since it was disclosed she was one of the big donors behind the pro-Grossman Super PAC, she might as well bring it out in the open. And she’s coming with a swing!
Lovely ad. If anything can turn things around for Grossman, maybe this ad will.

the ad just illustrates what a sham your – er.. their SuperPAC is.
It’s run by your best friends and next-door neighbors.
It features Clarissa again – who has been in your employ off and on for years.
It’s paid for in large part by your family fortune.
But you know nothing.
Yeah. That’s the ticket.

help her boy achieve his dream. Everybody’s got a Mother
Full disclosure: I’m supporting Mrs Coakley’s daughter Martha, and I’m a Mother of 5 grown children who hardly ever know what I’m up to on their behalf.

Who cares whether it’s better than Sciortino’s ad?
Steve would make a terrific governor.

…And in a few days we’ll say Steve would have made a terrific governor.

You’re not the first to do that by a long shot.

For what it is, it’s fine. I’m not remotely troubled by wealthy family members bankrolling their children. In today’s absurd post-Citizens climate, that means via a SuperPAC. The solution to that, in my view, is to fix the CU decision.
I guess that I find the piece a bit to “cutesy”. I would have preferred more edge from her — I agree that Ms. Grossman is likely to be a genuine force to be reckoned with, and I would have enjoyed seeing more of that. This piece was cream puff and fluff, while my own tastes run more towards cheese (from Formaggio’s, of course) and hot pepper jelly.
