let the games begin.
I’ll start the open thread.
The goods news is King Arthurs will re-open and I hear they’re getting some new out of town talent plus they’re replacing the urinals with the automatic flushers. Nice. Real nice.
Now the referendum will have the face of Steve Wynn.
How bad did Jim McHugh set up his fellow commissioners to vote for Wynn then after they committed he bailed? I can’t wait until he is deposed.
These’s still a few acts left in this play.
Please share widely!

After the repeal vote, I assume.
ryepower12 says
If anyone looks at this process at any depth, I can’t fathom how they wouldn’t be a repeal voter. Corrupt, making up rules as it goes along, ignoring the actual law at its whim…
This industry does what it pleases, then comes back for more.

Peter Porcupine says
Other than EB3, who is telling the truth about this? I have on Ch. 7 and it’s all boo-hoo for Revere, nothing about the sleaze in Everett.
The man deserves a damn Pulitzer Prize.
judy-meredith says
I ll second that!
mike_cote says
Write endlessly redundant posts about the same topics:
1) Boston Globe and everyone that works there suck.
2) Market Basket and Arthur T suck.
3) Gaming Commission and everyone on it or appearing before it are criminals.
4) Whitey Bulger is a victim of bad press.
judy-meredith says
Why not EB3?
Sorry, Mike, couldn’t resist.
mike_cote says
which I believe is a requirement for the prize.
Peter Porcupine says
…that bloggers aren’t JOURNALISTS?
(BTW – the Pulitzer isn’t a lifetime achievement award. It’s for a single story. Which you would know if you were a journalist, or even a BLOGGER)
mike_cote says
Thank you.
mike_cote says
There are:
1) Journalist who are not bloggers.
2) Bloggers who are not Journalist.
3) Bloggers who are also Journalist.
I am suggesting that EB3 is in the second group as itemized above. And Kevin Cullen is in the first group as itemized above.
I would further suggest that simply having a twitter account does not make a person a journalist.
centralmassdad says
Kevin Cullen, like much of the Glob, is sometimes a journalist, but often a purveyor of high-quality horseshit. The only difference between the Glob and EBIII is that the Glob guys get paid for it, at least for now, and have better grammar.

Holy Moly, it looks almost as if the fix were in.
Nah, not with these bastions of honesty and integrity involved. I’m sure that Carlo DeMaria would NEVER tolerate even a HINT of corruption in any Everett venture.
Now, about the Democratic gubernatorial nominee (who also happens to be the Attorney General). If you’re one of those people who looks at this process in any depth, and you end up being a repeal voter as a result, does that exercise increase or decrease your enthusiasm for the Democratic Party gubernatorial nominee?
What, if anything, should that nominee have to say about this (either in her role as candidate or as the sitting AG)?
Christopher says
I’m definitely voting for the AG and probably voting for repeal. The luxury of having it as its own question means it doesn’t have to factor into your gubernatorial decision, especially since the other candidate has a similar view and thus makes it a wash.
centralmassdad says
because you are opposed to gambling, or because this process has been corrupt?
Christopher says
I am not opposed to gambling, which is largely why I was open to it for longer than a lot of people here. The process has stunk to the point that I wonder if proponents are trying to shoot themselves in the foot.
centralmassdad says
I think his point was that there was, and is, a specific state official whose job is to investigate, prosecute, and police public corruption of the sort that has infected the Boston casino siting process.
How can it “not factor into the gubernatorial decision”?
Christopher says
Both Baker and Coakley oppose the repeal and have suggested they might defy the voters even if repeal passes, though I think independent candidate McCormick is claiming he is the only one on the November ballot to oppose them. Between Baker and Coakley there is not much to decide on this particular matter AND you even get to vote on it separately, which is how I justify not worrying too much about their positions. One could ask, I suppose what role they would play as Governor in making sure things were on the up and up, but again that’s not the question I heard and our nominee for AG whose job it will be to stay on top of this going forward IS on the record as opposed to casinos.

Who’s this tool Alan Wiszbicki? He works for the Globe and within minutes of Wynn winning the license this opinion piece appears on Bostonglobe.com
This propagandist picked one small portion of the many legal and factual problems the Everett site has and concluded that the mayor or anyone doesn’t have a caee and they’re idiots for trying.
Baahaha. The facts that we all know indicate otherwise. The Everett deal has the appearance of being a bag job with a healthy dose of underworld characters figuring into it. The law is very clear about the perception never mind it being fact.
It really must suck working for the Globe. Talk about being tools. It was one thing when they were tools for whatever self-rightous cause they were promoting but to be tools of Steve Wynn? Kill me now. Right Peter Canellos?

I just noticed this line:
That might be good news. As Hunter S. Thompson once said of H.R. Haldeman (or was it Erhlichman?), “Put the [expletive] on TV. Ten hours a day. Ten straight days.”
It couldn’t hurt the repeal effort.

whom David introduced us to a couple months ago. The mayor was quoted in the Globe today as saying in 10 years Everett will no longer be “the butt end of the city of Boston.” Very nice. Let’s hope he spares telling us which body part he thinks Everett will be.
petr says
… that Everett might well be the butt end of the city, precisely and exactly because they are willing to put up with these type of shenanigans. Going all-in on these types of shenanigans isn’t likely to produce a different outcome.

The Winslow Amendment (hey, I wasn’t there long enough to have more than a few). https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleII/Chapter23K/Section19 As originally proposed, the casino licenses would be awarded forever. I successfully proposed that casino licenses expire and be subject to renewal after 15 years. The only question is whether it dies a quiet death or if it sticks ala Prop. 2 1/2. You know which side the lobbyists will be picking.
HeartlandDem says
And you weren’t alone trying to knock some sense into Beacon Hill on this folly.
Just tell us why Charlie took the stupid road?
I know and you know and he knows that there is no such thing as 1.
dan-winslow says
The GOP proposed blocking fees–essentially licensing no casinos in Massachusetts, and the CT tribes would have gladly paid. No, this folly was entirely the product of our friends in the Dem establishment. Too bad. It’ll be 15 years till we can reassess the cost benefits. IF the Winslow amendment isn’t repealed.
Peter Porcupine says
The main argument I hear from pro-casino forces is that it is just so gosh darn unfair to allow a repeal after these nice young men have spent SO much money on going through the application process in good faith, relying upon the sterling word of the Legislature they had bought. To allow the unwashed to exercise self-government as allowed by the MA Constitution is just so gauche. Such an epitome of the hoi polloi.
What WILL they say if in a few years the license expires after they have gone to the expense of building gen-you-wine FOUNTAINS and statues on top of the terminally polluted site? LOTS of donations to be had there!!!
(Dan – why the heck aren’t YOU running for Governor? You retain the title of smartest politician I have ever met)
judy-meredith says
Not as disarmingly charming as Charlie of course, but totally sincere and unaffected.
HeartlandDem says
Prominent GOP and conservatives including Healey/Hillman/Baker/Polito did not/have not thrown any weight at this. And yes, it is true the D establishment is to blame for carrying the water for the likes off the Las Vegas casino crowd. Creepy.
I don’t remember you falling on the sword and stating NO casinos.

C/B for the commonwealth is a net loser. Simple casino math.

for all the coming disasters and broken promises of this casino mess if the repeal is not successful. Maybe I will need a larger hard drive.
dan-winslow says
True, after securing the Dems’ agreement to time limit casino licenses and after assuring the local referendum process (I fought to include adjacent precincts. Marty, ironically, wasn’t with me on that fight) I gave the final bill my support. And then worked with local activists and neighbors to stop Wynn’s proposed casino in Foxboro. Check the local press at the time: I was the first public official to fight an actual casino proposal. I only fell on my sword when I ran in a Republican primary for federal office. Though some say I was pushed. ;o)
HeartlandDem says
Is the one who gets gold stars. He voted against the bill with a proposal active in his home town. That’s kahunas.
