Interesting day for anyone following Cambridge politics. City Council candidate John Sanzone was just outed for his 100+ posts, under his own name, on white nationalist website Stormfront.
But I’m more interested in what it says that an incumbent Councillor, Nadeem Mazen, and three other candidates (Mariko Davidson, Romain Waite, and Jake Crutchfield), found fit to associate with him.
This is not a guy who had some deep dark buried secret. This is a guy who openly posted hate speech online under his own name, many, many times. The slightest due diligence by his slate-mates would have revealed this. And this is a group that explicitly ran claiming that they were aiming for a different kind of slate, where they would work more closely together. As Nadeem Mazen said in the second article I linked to above, “It’s not just a slate as in years gone by, where people affiliate loosely under the banner of a few ideals. This is a group that has learned to be very deferent to one another, to work together and really value one another’s opinions and work explicitly on a day-to-day basis.”
So did they know about, and “defer to” Sanzone’s racist and homophobic views, or is their whole slate just a sham?
I believe they should all drop out of the race. I assume they didn’t know about Sanzone’s views. But that means they are seriously lacking in the competence needed to be political leaders. If you can’t find the truth about a sketchy person who puts it all out there online for everyone to see, how are you going to find the truth about sketchy people who are more polished? Lobbyists and developers trying to sell the city on their pet projects, for example?
