Fantasy sports betting is straight up gambling. Sucker’s bet too. Worse than the state lottery. Clear as clear can be it is gambling of the pari-mutual type.
Congress says it made some changes to the law a few years ago so those of us in one of the millions of widely popular fantasy sports leagues and office pools are not felons. Protect regular Joes from being hauled into court by Fred Wyshak types.
Like Steve Wynn coming in and paying everyone and everything to say good things as the highly unethical Gaming Commission holds the gates wide open for him to steamroll his casino through we now see these leagues doing it at a national level.
Fantasy sports leagues are the same thing, times ten thousand. BUT look at the stake holders. Sports leagues, teams owners, TV networks, and other high-powered groups and people with money up the wazoo. Power baby, Power.
Perhaps the leagues will die on their own because word will get out that the same .5% of players win 99.5% of the pot. It’s a racket. Stay away. Fool’s game.
But anyway as we watch the big time players like ESPN and the NFL lobby Washington expect our state legislature to do something. Why do I say that? Because one of the leagues just hired Martha Coakley to plead their case, that’s why.
I know, try not to laugh. Not only is she one of the dumbest lawyers ever to walk into a courtroom, she’s hated by the powers on Beacon Hill. People who would love to stick it up her ass. She made a career of unnecessarily being prosecutorially nasty to people.
Now she’s a lobbyist. Damage done.
We know she went in and begged her former underling Maura Healy to do this one big $ize favor and ignore her client’s bookie joint.
Bob Kraft and Martha Coakley are the promoters and face of fantasy sports in Massachusetts. Haven’t seen a tandem like that since…since…the Quincy couple on the Bonnie and Clyde crime spree.
We all know it ain’t gonna end well for them.
