From the Washington Post:
The House on Thursday overwhelmingly passed legislation aimed at tightening controls on refugees from Syria and Iraq, in what Republican leaders say is a swift and strong response to last week’s terror attacks in Paris.
The vote was 289 to 137.
The bill’s fate, however, is uncertain after President Obama delivered a veto threat Wednesday and key senators said they are more concerned about security vulnerabilities other than the refugee program.
And from Politico:
…Democratic insiders expect 60 members of their caucus to support the GOP measure. Some rank-and-file Democrats are concerned about looking soft on national security. Already the Blue Dog Coalition — a group of moderate Democrats — has announced that it will support the bill.
The legislation, the American Security Against Foreign Enemies Act, would require the FBI, Homeland Security Department and director of national intelligence to certify to Congress that any refugee from Syria or Iraq is “not a threat to the security of the United States” before being allowed to settle in the United States. President Barack Obama has proposed allowing 10,000 Syrian refugees to enter the country this year, part of the Western response to the wave of millions of refugees fleeing that country’s bloody civil war and Islamic State-related violence.

Trump is cleaning up in the polls:
jconway says
The Times had a good piece on how NH is typically the firewall against religiously conservative candidates like Huckabee in 2008 or Santorum in 2012, unfortunately for the GOP ‘moderates’, Trump is still cleaning their clocks alongside the religious conservatives. Because he fits more into the Buchannan/Perot mold of an anti-free trade/anti-immigrant populist, which did well for Pat in 92′ and 96′ in their GOP primary.
Now, if you were to combine Rubio, Fiorina, Christie, Jeb, and Kasich into a single candidacy-it would get 40% of the vote-more than enough to beat Trump. But none of those five have an incentive to get out between now and then. And as it’s become clear, all are pandering to the right.

I am so disheartened by what seems to be the default position of when in doubt, exclude people, which is exactly the opposite of what this country theoretically stands for. Hatred seems both emotionally and politically easier than love, but that must be such a sour existence. Why isn’t the field at least more level to begin with so the voices of inclusion and tolerance at least have a fighting chance?

Lynch has said he wants better “vetting.”
Keating also gave reasons related to screening.
That seems like the go-to reasoning for opposing.

Correction: Opposing meaning not wanting to take refugees, and in this case that would mean supporting the bill.
