In these troubling times, I draw inspiration by calling up the spirits of my immigrant ancestors and heroes.
Exposing the Trumpists of his time, Abraham Lincoln’s wisdom seems eerily prescient today :
” I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be ? How could anyone who abhors the oppression of Negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people ? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation we began by declaring that ” all men are created equal.” We now practically read it ” all men are created equal , except Negroes.” When Know-Nothings get control, it will read ” all men are created equal, except Negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.” When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty — to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.”

This quote from Lincoln is eerie. We need the Democrats to take on what happening with more historical context. I think it will genuinely help. I have been talking to high school acquaintances who are on the fence about Trump and are still lost In their disdain for Hillary or in inapposite comparisons to the Obama administration. I think this is a case where standing out a few feet and helping ordinary people who did not have to benefit of college, frankly, will make more a difference than we think. That’s is what FDR did so skillfully. Remember, most voters in this country do not have a bachelor degree

…since the vast majority of adults I know do. Ironically one who doesn’t is my own father who attended, but did not finish college. However, he has worked his entire adult life in computer programming and data processing which to me seems like a profession which would require a degree.
