Massie: “Charlie Baker’s a fraud”, an “empty suit”. Gonzalez: “It’s easy to be popular when you don’t do anything, and you don’t take a stand, and your whole approach to the job is to be cautious rather than courageous.” Welp.
Here’s the discussion with WGBH’s Jim Braude. Accountability!
I have to say, it’s really refreshing to see two folks challenging the Everything Is Fine coziness between the Beacon Hill establishment (including Marty Walsh) and Baker. Think about the kinds of things that are slam-dunk investments, like universal pre-K, that simply never come up because no one challenges the consensus.
Also, Braude should know better than to come at Bob Massie on wind power. After a generation of fighting about it, we now have a “toehold” in wind power?
Watch it!

Bumping this since I think it was very informative. I was leaning toward Massie prior to watching this and the convention coverage, but Gonzalez has started to warm on me as a thoughtful and articulate progressive. Massie is too focused in this piece on his particular vision for a post-carbon economy while Gonzalez is zeroing in on Baker’s specific failures, the media’s total failure to hold him accountable for them, and what he will do differently on day 1. As a progressive voter who cares about building a different economy, I like where Massie is going. As a progressive voter who wants to beat Baker and replace him with an effective governor, I like where Jay is going. Might be a game time decision for me, but the fact that Jay Gonzalez has been endorsed by electeds I respect, Progressive Massachusetts, and a decisive majority of convention delegates is definitely swaying me his way. My Bernie and Clinton friends are breaking his way rather evenly, which shows he is capable of uniting the party against Baker as well.
