Republicans are quick to attack Alexandria Ocastio-Cortez as an evil socialist as they point to the failures of socialism with Venezuela and the former USSR as proof. This argument ignores the fact that Alexandria Ocastio-Cortez is a Democratic Socialist, which is quite different from a socialist and the fact that neither Venezuela nor the USSR were truly socialist nations. But I digress.
What Alexandria Ocastio-Cortez said in reply to those who falsely attack her as a socialist was this: “I don’t think people wake up in the morning and say, ‘I’m a capitalist!’”
Well, maybe there are a few but I think she hit on a strategy to deal with those who fear the very mention of the word “Socialist”, even as many look forward to their Social Security checks, but again, I digress.
Are there any capitalists in the USA?
I’ve never met one.
I’ve never seen one run for office.
I lived through the Great Recession just as my parents lived through the Great Depression and I have no doubt that future generations will live through great failures of capitalism. In no time in the past have I ever met or read about any American who, in the midst of an economic depression or recession felt it best to let the free markets run their course, let failing businesses fail, let poor investments evaporate, allow entire communities go from prosperity to poverty as we stand by and watch capitalism run its course, unbridled and unassisted by government involvement. That, of course, would be the desire of any true capitalist and again, I’ve never met such a creature.
The next time I am in a conversation with someone who tries to discount or disqualify Ocastio-Cortez as a “socialist”, I’ll ask them if they are a capitalist and if so, what did they do to try and stop the government from implementing the bank bailouts that saved their 401-K , as any true capitalist would do.
