Rep. Paul Brodeur (www.PaulBrodeur.com) won the preliminary election tonight for Mayor of Melrose. The top two winners will face off in the November 5 general election. The percentage vote tally was as follows :
Paul Brodeur 32%
Monica Medeiros 30%
Jackie Lavender Bird 18%
Mike Zwirko 11%
Manisha Bewtra 9%

Congrats not to Paul, but to the people of Melrose for electing such a dedicated leader. They are a very lucky community to have him.

They didn’t elect anyone yet, this was just a preliminary, where the top 2 vote-getters move onto the final round in November. Ranked choice voting would have prevented this situation, as only one election would be necessary!

I always support Ranked Choice Voting and agree with that comment, although a two round runoff at least ensures the winner is the preferred candidate of the majority of voters. I suspect if this had been an RCV election, that Brodeur would still have won.
Although it’s a non partisan race, he and the other candidates who did not advance to the final runoff are all Democrats while Medeiros is a Republican. We will see in November if the Democratic vote consolidates behind Brodeur.
