I’m old enough to remember the popular ‘I like Ike’ buttons of the 1950’s touting 1952 Republican presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower.
Now, I’m trying to understand what accounts for my guy’s — Joe Biden — lead in all the polls?
Those of us who actually talked with him personally — I met him in 2008 campaigning for Obama in New Hampshire — really like him. I have written previously about how we bonded over our mutual recovery from serious illness and our learning to box from our Dads. Joe, a stutterer who was mocked and bullied growing up, often quotes his Dad : “It’s not how many times you get knocked down in life, you have to get back up and fight.” My late beloved older brother Joe had a lifelong stutter and was taunted mercilessly as a boy. Maybe that’s why I feel so close to Joe Biden.
Whatever the reason, it dawned on me that people like Joe because… THEY — KNOW — JOE whether they’ve met him in person or not.
