  1. If and when something does go wrong (1 Reply)

I bet at least one person in state, local, or federal government says “No one could ever have foreseen this”.

  2. Tom- I think what shepherd is getting at is (1 Reply)

put in a perspective that a liberal like myself can understand, what happens if you get a President Cheney, who decides one day, maybe when anti-war or anti-Wall Street protests get a little too prevalent, that he’s going to use his authority as commander in chief to start fucking everybody up. Put a couple thousand people in Guantanamo type prisons. Use drones to take out some dissenting families. Who’s going to stop him, if the generals go along with his essential plans? The Supreme Court? What’s to stop a psycho with control of the military?
The problem with all of this is, of course, even if every “good” man, woman, and child was armed, the army could probably still win because they could use advanced weaponry. Also, of course, most soldiers would never go along with a Dictator Cheney’s orders to kill American civilians.
And of course I sound like a lunatic, but this is what I always imagined was the thrust of the NRA’s position, and the only logical justification for the second amendment.

  3. That's a really long letter (0 Replies)

Seems to be some misplaced paranoia going on there.
Frankly I don’t think you should even have the ability to change your vote from who your state voted for, as an “Elector”. A scary idea that these Electors can be “faithless” and veto the populace if they so choose.

On election night I was half hoping that Obama would lose the popular vote but win the electoral, so the elitist GOP might be bestirred to join with the rest of us small-d democrats and finally do something about the ridiculous Electoral College. It’s an archaic, stupid institution, and should be eliminated, IMO.

  4. Obama caves (1 Reply)

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. One of the main Narratives of the past four years.

  5. Wasn't Weld doing the same sort of stuff back in the day? (0 Replies)

You know, a lot of sniffing around and grave talk intended to hype himself up, while never actually delivering an indictment on a powerful politician. In those days, the high-profile “target” was Kevin White. Never indicted, right? Could be said that is was all a big show, an advertisement for Weld.

  6. Sounds really odd (1 Reply)

I couldn’t find the story- is it on the free site or just the print/paid edition?

  7. Doubt that a numskull like Boehner can be reached. (0 Replies)

As has been stated many times before, then GOP of today is basically a collection of unapologetic crooks, bigots, and pro-plutocracy extremists. How they keep getting elected is beyond me, and something I’d rather not think too much about. I hope and pray that Obama goes over the cliff rather than caving to these scoundrels and crackpots again.
Admirable of Menino to try, though.

  8. Yikes. Why even get into that? (1 Reply)

Don’t you have enough to do without playing hall monitor or whatever, David? We’re all adults here, pretty much.

  9. Increase the penalty for corporate manslaughter (2 Replies)

Which is only $1000 now. Should be ten million at least.
I was gonna say gas tax, but that one was already taken.:)

  10. So long as he doesn't have the power to torture or indefinitely detain. (0 Replies)

What have we humble civilians to fear from somebody whose job it is to police government agencies?

  11. Good point, but what % of white males are union members? (1 Reply)

Perhaps rumors of the demise of unions have been exaggerated, but I’ve heard that membership has steadily declined since the 70′s, at least nationally. Not that I think this is in any way a positive development.

  12. What would the GOP do? (0 Replies)

Certainly I don’t know what they’ve done historically in situations like this, but I have a hard time imagining the Republicans shooting themselves in the foot by voluntarily injecting uncertainty into what had previously been a pretty secure district/seat.
Also, do we think we’ll get the same big turnout in urban areas for a special election that we got for the Obama/Warren election? At the risk of stereotyping or at least oversimplifying, I have to ask whether the same white suburban males who put Brown in the first time won’t be able to do it again absent the urban turnout?

  13. Was there ever a move to confiscate the waterfront hotel (0 Replies)

where the Craigslist killing happened? This story made me very uncomfortable as well- it definitely seemed like picking on the little guy because he can’t fight back. Lots of hotels have been unwitting headquarters for illicit activity, but this is the only place Ortiz is trying to seize.

  14. Nice to be in the U.S., ain't it? (1 Reply)

Don’t think we’ve ever seen wartime civilian deaths in the millions over here, except for maybe the Native Americans. And I’ve never understood the angle you’re coming at it from, the cold pragmatic detachment thing. If it’s your child (or sister, or mother) who’s the so-called “collateral damage”, any number of civilian casualties is too many.

  15. Great post, Ryan (1 Reply)

In terms of the immediate situation, what do you think of Krugman’s idea that Obama has to be truly willing to let the “fiscal cliff” scenario play out, or else fall victim to Boehner and McConnell’s blackmail once again? Also, I think Warren should be doing the tv shows making the case for ideas like those put forth by SomervilleTom above.

  16. What an ass. (0 Replies)

His words are completely worthless. Dishonesty and artifice have taken such a hold on this “nice guy”, he’s got GOP Presidential nominee written all over him. Stupid as Bush and oily as Romney- if he wins this election I fear we’ll never see the end of him.

  17. This is utterly disgraceful. (0 Replies)

What a coward Brown is. This was, without a doubt, one of the most despicable campaigns I’ve ever seen. Scary that we might have to watch this deceitful, pusillanimous fool prance and prattle about for the next six years, “representing” Massachusetts.
If he’s too scared to debate Warren maybe he can send Karl Rove or somebody in his place.

  18. First question should be why (0 Replies)

Warren, as a Native American, saw fit to march in a Columbus Day Parade. Just kidding.

  19. Magical budgets (0 Replies)

Was that the Laffer curve he trotted out to pay for everything? Good grief.
