(It is worth noting that Perry's $110,000 hack hire was, at the time, partially defended by some of our differently-winged friends. Part of the defense was that Perry was effectively filling a job vacated by David Vieira (a former sheriff's employee who was elected to the legislature). The Globe reported at the time that Sheriff Cummings would "fund the special sheriff's position in part with money previous paid to Vieira as a deputy." IIRC, Vieira made roughly half of what Perry was set to earn.
However, if Vieira's salary was to be redirected to Perry's hack job, then why did Cummings need a $104,000 appropriation? He shouldn't have needed more than about $50,000. Something doesn't add up here. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see (a) if the legislature overrides Patrick's veto (I doubt they will, since the issue is now radioactive), and (b) if Cummings manages to come up with the money to pay Perry anyway. - promoted by David)

(It would also be a very good idea indeed to extend the public records law to the legislative and judicial branches; the exemptions are totally unjustified by any legitimate public policy reason. Beyond that, I like Eddie's ideas better than Scot Lehigh's. - promoted by David)
