After a long career in writing and editing, with a bit of communications and PR, I have sold out and become a direct care paraprofessional in the mental health system -- the sort of thing one does at about one-third my age. I cannot see a path to further downward mobility while still working full time, although if the economy keeps getting worse, something may open up. Needless to say, I have a lot more fun trying to help people than I did publishing hundreds of thousands of words a year. Moreover, since my present non-union job is guaranteed by a court settlement, I am one of few human services workers who can be fired if I screw up, and only if I screw up.
