Today the Herald reports on the fact that Reed Hillman, Kerry Healey’s new running mate, tried (unsuccessfully) to secure a pardon for one James Mitchell, a Palmer resident who once ran for the state Senate and whose criminal record included three drunk driving arrests (one conviction, one continuance, and one dismissal), one other driving offense, and – get this – an assault on a police officer. Governor Romney denied the pardon application in May 2004.
Apparently, Mitchell applied for the pardon after being denied a gun license because of the assault conviction.
Why would a former head of the State Police back a pardon application from a guy who was convicted of assaulting a cop? Especially because now the guy wants to own a gun? What was Hillman thinking?
