The Red Sox are very important to Massachusetts voters. But Deval Patrick has not fully explained his own baseball past.
While he talks no end about growing up on the south side of Chicago, Patrick has been stangely silent about his baseball loyalties — was he, and is he still, a White Sox fan? The White Sox eliminated the Red Sox from the playoffs last year and are leading the Wild Card race this year. It’s a legitimate question to ask Patrick where his loyalties truly lie.
Or was he a Chicago Cubs fan? Was Patrick secretly happy when Nomar left Boston for Wrigley Field? Does Patrick like Wrigley, with its ivy covered outfield walls, more than he likes our lyric little bandbox in the Fens? He hasn’t said. He did, after all, attend an Ivy League college.
And then there was the time he spent in Atlanta for that soft drink company. Was/is Patrick actually a Braves fan? The Braves, as is well known, abandoned Boston many years ago, moving first to Milwaukee, which is just a couple of hours away from — you guessed it — Chicago. The Patrick connection to the Braves really needs to be more fully explored.
Anybody have Frank Phillips’ phone number?

Or if you like, Deval said on the radio recently something to the effect that the White Sox taught him how to be a Red Sox fan.

Some of us will not be satisfied until we know if Deval likes the Blackhawks or the Bruins.

Because even though Deval has a record of being a baseball fan, I think there is something he’s trying to hide when it comes to hockey.

Are they still playing that? I thought they finally gave up a couple years back.

That Chris Gabrilei bought the league and is paying the players out of his own pocket.

At my house, it’s hockey season all year. My son plays year-round. Lemme tell ya, I’ll take sitting in a cold hockey rink in the dead of summer over standing outside in the heat and mosquitos during baseball season any old time.

Not caring about baseball and my distaste for clam chowder is what stands in the way of this native Californian from ever being considered a real yankee.
