A poll released by State House News Service yesterday (summary, data) has Deval Patrick winning 51% of the vote, compared to Kerry Healey’s 27%. Christy Mihos got 8%, Grace Ross got 2%, and 5% remain undecided. The poll of 358 registered voters, 95% of whom said they definitely or probably would vote tomorrow, has a margin of error is 5%, and was taken Nov. 1-2.
Interestingly, the poll asked what would happen if Mitt Romney instead of Kerry Healey were the Republican candidate. Result: Patrick 50%, Romney 29%. Sorry, Howie — no dice there.
One day left to turn Nov. 7 into a truly history-making event. Do everything you can to make it happen.
Please share widely!
My original prediction was 50% for Patrick and 38% for Healey. This is probably too conservative, given that I don’t believe Healey has broken 34% in any poll since the primaries, and this is about the 100th indy poll showing Deval with a 20-something lead.

It’s certainly not over yet, and I plan to hold signs and do other stuff for Patrick on Tuesday. I’ll probably make a stop over to RI to help out Whitehouse as well.

Good luck to all tomorrow, and good work!
Not to defend the guy, but if he had actually run for re-election here I think you would have seen a very different result. Remember, this poll is essentially who would vote for Romney after he left us behind. It’s also who would vote for Romney based on a vicious campaign run by Healey.
Good to see no sign of slippage, tomorrow will be a big day.

On the Mitt thing – I hate the guy, and these results are interesting but have to be taken with a boulder of salt – if he had not abandoned us for the national stage and was wooing this state for re-election with his 100% attention and (phony but still effective) charm, he would be extremely competitive…
that if Dukakis did it, it’s OK? Not exactly the tune that Healey & Co. have been whistling of late.
No matter WHAT the AFL-CIO radio commercial says, he’s still here and didn’t ‘leave the state’.

Duke, on the other hand, refused to let poor Evelyn Murphy even have the keys to the Corner Office, and ran around the country WHILE STILL A SITTING GOVERNOR. He ran for reelection KNOWING he’d spend the last two years doing so.
<

Mitt didn’t – because he wanted to earn the paycheck he doesn’t take. Unlike the Duke.
Was Bush not sitting Governor of Texas in 2000? Bush and Dukakis, however, seemed very proud of their respective home states.
While Mitt is an anomaly.

Do you have any IDEA how often he has to refute the idea he’s a wild eyed liberal, just BECAUSE he’s from Mass., when he’s in, say, Oklahoma?
going about making Massachusetts the butt of all his jokes. (For that matter: What jokes? But seriously….)
<
p>
That’s what people–not just partisan Democrats like us–are so frosted about.
..about how Duke was a living, breathing joke out on the campaign trail. I would just suggest you think about the tank.
As I recall, when asked (about then-candidate Dukakis), “What’s the funniest thing he ever did?” George answered, “He’s doing it.”
<

I try very hard not to think about the tank, thank you very much!
When Dukakis ran in 1988, the state was heading toward a fiscal crisis, but the state government covered it up that year so that Dukakis could continue his campaign theme of “the Massachusetts Miracle.” Most people were furious in 1989 (I was here.) and the result was a governor race in 1990 betweeen a Republican (Weld) and a reactionary Democrat (Silber).

So in general, yes, running for higher office leads to some form of neglect of the current office. We’d have been better off if Dukakis hadn’t run for reelection in 1986, and we’d have been better off of Romney had done his damn job for the last two years and started really running for president in 2007.
Presidential primaries are not being held – and Romney, at the moment, has not declared himself a candidate for President. Dukakis was a candidate for President and he was campaigning for himself. Romney is campaigning for others. Most importantly, Dukakis never intentionally insulted Massachusetts when he was out of the state. Romney does so almost every time he appears. Additionally, even when he isn’t campaigning elsewhere, Romney’s attendance record is abysmal – as is Healey. Galvin has been in charge more than anybody ever realizes.
Has Deval up by 29%, but it looks like they may not have included Mihos or Ross.

Of note is they also have Lieberman by only 4. That’s the closest anyone has shown it. They have Va and Mo dead tied at 50/50, Cardin by 6 in Md, and, surprisingly, did not do Mt or RI.

Clearly pollsters are having trouble getting a handle on the Ct Senate race.
