Danvers: Feds stood up

December 5, 2006 By Charley on the MTA

What do local safety officials and the exploding (not in a good way) Danvers company CAI have in common? They don’t want anything to do with federal investigators:

Officials with the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, which is probing the cause of the massive explosion, said officials with CAI Inc. skipped a walkthrough at the factory Saturday and failed to appear for interviews yesterday. The company, which manufactures ink products, also is accused of ignoring requests for documents about the operation of the facility and the chemicals that exploded about 3 a.m. Nov. 22, destroying at least 10 homes and businesses and damaging dozens more.

I heard on ‘BUR this morning that the company said it was having trouble rescheduling people to do the walkthrough. Riggghht, Roger that. Your company blows up, but you’ve just got to fix that toner cartridge or spiff up that holiday party flyer right now. Can’t wait.

Again, Romney is nowhere to be found on this. We have to really try hard to imagine actual leadership in this state.

Speaking of which: Hey Deval, it’s not too early to hold forth on this kerfuffle. Should the feds get in or not? Don’t worry about stepping on Mitt’s toes, here — he’s got “better” things to do anyway.

The fact that the local authorities + the business itself doesn’t want them in seems real dubious to me.

The problem with the Feds is that they often don’t let things get “smoothed out”.  How much serious crime and corruption is sniffed out at the state and local level?  I can’t remember the last time an A.G. for Massachusetts stood at a podium about uncovering real organized crime or political corruption.  It seems the A.G. is content to look serious for the cameras as a US Attorney reads off an indictment.  Look to Rhode Island and the Station Night Club fire for some serious smoothing.

Then again, it could be that organized crime and political corruption no longer exist in Massachusetts.

…and there were just a lot of unhappy fisherfolk in their wake.  And it wasn’t becasue it was Mass. – they had also just denied a red tide emergency application to Jeb Bush!

Are nowhere near Danvers or Eastern MA for that matter… he’s dipping them into deeper waters. I just wish he would test the water depth with both feet… đŸ™‚
