Name tag, a simple and effective social and civic tool

January 17, 2007 By jpfromjp

At the stroke of midnight on new years eve I slapped on my my name tag and my social experiment of wearing a name tag every day in 2007 began. So far its been a blast. The Boston Globe featured the story this past Sunday and today CBS 4 Boston made it one of their top stories and did a fantastic job about capturing the spirit and possibilities about this simple and effective social and civic tool.

The are thousand of great people doing necessary hard work and making a difference here in MA and across the country. I invite you to imagine what’s possible for your life, neighborhood, our state and country if your willing to take a simple action and step outside of your comfort zone and joining me for one day (or more if your inspired to) and wear a name tag. I also invite you to email me with stories and pictures of the experience so I can post it for all to enjoy. Lets find out! Visit the name tag blog to learn how to go name tagging with me.

Joseph Porcelli, Founder and Director of Neighbors for Neighbors. Socialize. Organize. Make a difference.

    there’s also a Neighborsforneighbors.COM.

As well as neighbors4neighbors.org, underwritten by a CBS station. That one started after Hurricane Andrew.

    Any connection?

      Hi Kira,

      <

      p>
There is no connection – though the names are similar. Neighbors for Neighbors started in Jamaica Plain MA and now spread to Mission Hill and by the summer hopefully to White River Junction VT as I have a friend who is interested who lives there. Any one else interested? Email Me.

Keep us posted.  I do suspect that neighborhoods with lots of social interaction are more likely to be vocal about issues that will affect their neighborhood, and so helping people get to know their neighbors just might help keep community involvement up.

As a side note, as someone who is terrible about remembering names, I encourage all of yous to encourage people to wear name tags at parties and events.  It really helps folks like me.

We all have little silver pins with an elephant emblem and our names – we put them on for our secret meetings!

…that remains Darrell Crate’s only positive accomplishment at the helm of the Mass GOP 😉

Might consider joining, though it’s just one of those things I’m gonna constantly forget/lose…

Plus, I’m already infamous. I’m not sure I need more people recognizing me in my town. 😉

Didn’t Elaine suggest to Lloyd Bruan, Goerge Costanza’s friend who was working for Mayor Dinkins, that the Mayor propose in his campaign for re-election that people in New York City wear name tags to make the city friendlier?  And didn’t that end up being a bad idea which led to Dinkins’ downfall and Giuliani’s initial election?  Please, please, do not pass on this idea to Deval Patrick.

A huge pleasure to join @RepDylan as he launched the #Massachusetts Friends of UK Legislative Caucus at the home of the @FCDOPeterAbbott. It was wonderful to talk about how we can collaborate to benefit constituents and deepen long-standing ties! #mapoli

If you're familiar with #mapoli I have questions for you!

My intern is applying for an internship there - obvs I'm thrilled. 😊 What should she know about how the MA legislature is staffed? What other essential knowledge would you pass along?

It's April in #mapoli which means budget season is in full swing. The House will soon pitch a tax relief proposal alongside their 2024 fiscal plan.
