State House News (via Keller): Sen. Therese Murray denies certain things about David Bernstein’s article alleging improper funnelling of funds to a crony: She’s never been to Italy. She’s never had drinks with alleged “drinking buddies”. Roger on both of those, Senator; props for anyone who can find a picture of the trio sipping Chianti at the Piazza Navona.
As for the meat of the story, she deals with the press with her apparently usual warmth and bonhomie:
“I pretty much know where it comes from, but I’m not going to respond to it,” Murray said during an interview in State House halls as she walked between meetings. Asked if she planned to respond formally to the article, Murray replied, “Not at all. It’s beneath me.”
Waa-a-alll … you might want to rethink that strategery, Senator, because it looks like other people are happy to explain it for you. The question of what’s “beneath you” is exactly what’s at stake here.

Where is her pay off here? I find it hard to believe that she would go to this effort for campaign contributions. She is the Chairwoman of Ways and Means raising $$$ is no problem.

Either this story will go away… or it’s not going to be a very good time to be Therese Murray. For the sanctity of the system, I hope there’s nothing here but some misunderstanding.

I guess that’s possible, but she’s got two pretty good journalists on her tail now, and more coming to get in on the action.

I fully expect to be dissapointed – and at least, if that’s the case, there’ll probably be one less crooked politician around. It’s just a hope, because that would be a serious betrayal of trust that could take some time to gain back.

…unless Anna Nicole Smith is somehow mixed up in the story.

Talk about not passing the smell test.

Bernstein’s article suggests that wasn’t it, and there’s an alternative explanation (Deval=very pro-gambling, Bosley = against); but I agree, the puzzling sequence of events in Bosley’s hiring and hasty departure suggests that they found out something untoward — like this.
