Governor Patrick continues to do the right thing in various ways.
- Patrick will march in Boston’s gay pride parade. An excellent move — and, apparently, a first for a sitting Massachusetts Governor. With the June 14 ConCon fast approaching, the state’s leadership needs to stand literally shoulder to shoulder with the pro-marriage community. That’s what Patrick is doing. Oh, and by the way — feel free to do a bit of social networking yourself by clicking on the MassEquality ad in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Or just send them some money.
- Relatedly, Patrick’s latest podcast makes a strong statement in favor of marriage equality, and also appeals to those who don’t support equality to nonetheless oppose sending the anti-marriage amendment to the ballot, pointing out — correctly — that if the question goes to the ballot, out-of-state interests will deluge Massachusetts for the next two years, and it will be very unpleasant. Listen, or read the transcript.
- DeRomneyfication continues. The Patrick administration has sensibly forced the resignation of Aaron D’Elia, the spectacularly underqualified head of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. D’Elia, you’ll recall, was installed in that position by lame-duck ex-Gov Mitt “I object to lame duck appointments” Romney in December of last year, shortly before the door hit Romney on the ass on his way out. Yet D’Elia, who was an underling at A&F, had no background in science. Curious. To his credit, D’Elia was gracious in his departure:
“I’m disappointed that I can’t continue, but I respect the governor’s decision,” said D’Elia. “He has the right to make decisions like this. My job was to execute, and I feel like I’ve done that.”
Governor Patrick has already shown that he’s serious about kicking MA’s innovation economy into high gear. This is another step along that road.
Good news all around.

That’s excellent news about Deval marching in the parade. Not only is the parade happening a few days before the ConCon, it is happening a few days before the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Loving v. Virginia. For advocated of fairness and equality, there are many reasons to march and celebrate together this weekend.

Deval marched in the Boston Gay Pride parade last year as well. (My partner and I were part of his big contingent.) Glad, though not surprised, to see that he’s sticking with his friends.

I have to say, I agreed with everything the governor said in his podcast but this especially stuck out to me:
