Marty Meehan’s going to moderate the last MA-05 debate before the primary, on August 27.
Say what?
Hasn’t his wife already thrown in with one of the candidates?
Don’t you think he might be biased towards someone whom he thinks would carry on his legacy, when his legacy itself ought to be vigorously debated?
Isn’t there anyone else they could have gotten?
I’m sorry, I understand all the candidates want to be on Marty’s good side, but this is absurd. This isn’t a debate, it’s a ring-kissing exercise. Stay home, Marty.

I think it would be a good idea earlier perhaps, but to be the final debate is ridiculous.

remembers this. And really goes out his way to screw Marty as the years go on.

It is amusing that Marty won’t openly endorse Niki though. I suppose that saves him from having to defend her lack of experience and such.

Similarly, Barney Frank’s endorsement yesterday said she was a great candidate, highly qualified, but in no way justified those claims. The closest he got was saying she’d surely follow through with Meehan aims like getting us out of Iraq. Uh huh.

I suppose voters are supposed to watch Niki get basted in the juices of fellowship and association with experienced politicians. Pull her out when she’s done and poof you have your new Congresswoman!

whether there’s any precedent for something like this — a departing official moderating a debate on who his or her successor will be? It strikes me as an incredibly, incredibly bad idea.

Imagine … George W. Bush moderating the final debate among the Republican presidential candidates. Heh.

Yes, Marty has hit upon an ingenious way to distribute his $5 million campaign kitty that combines the highest principles of reality television with the lowest form of political groveling.

Marty will moderate the 5th District debate on August 27 and then select “the winner” of the debate after a post-debate candidate/moderator “meet and greet” in The Spin Room that doubles as the home for the Political Science Club at UMass Lowell.
<
p>
The evening will conclude with Marty’s announcement of “the winner of the 5th District election….err debate” and his presentation of an oversized cardboard check for $5 million from the Committee to Re-elect Marty Meehan to Nikki Tsongas in recognition of “Nikki’s unparalleled (with the exception of myself) ability to profess care and concern for our 5th District constituents without advocating on behalf of a single specific social or economic policy that will advance their health or economic well-being.” Then, Marty will be chauffered in his UMass Lowell-provided automobile to Foxboro where he will tailgate for three days with his former 5th Districts constituents as he prepares to root on his beloved New England Patriots take on The New York Giants in a pre-season game. Marty, how do I apply for a job at UMass Lowell that is just half as cushy and stress-free as yours?

On a related note, does it bother anybody else that there’s been a Bush or a Clinton on every presidential ballot since 1980?

And 1972 was the last time a Bush or Dole has not been on the Republican ticket.
