I think Niki is going to win, but I’m not prepared to sit back and just “hope” that it happens. We have 24 hours to make sure that it happens. Like a lot of you, staffers from my office have been volunteering on their own time with the Tsongas campaign, and tomorrow they’re organizing an Election Day phonebank in Boston. I’ve heard from a lot of activists and Tsongas supporters that want to help out but because of professional obligations can’t make it up to the 5th. Well, this is the perfect opportunity to lend a hand in the 11th hour.
My staffers’ phonebank will be at the Massachusetts Teachers Association at 20 Ashburton Place. We’ll be making calls from 10 AM until 7:30 PM, and we’ll make sure that the call center is stocked with coffee, doughnuts, pizza, soda and snacks. And, I promise, the calls will end before the Sox game starts.
If you’re interested in stopping by the phonebank and helping send Niki to Congress, please email volunteerforNiki@yahoo.com.
And if you are able to travel to the 5th on Election Day and want to help with the GOTV effort, call Tsongas Campaign Headquarters at 1-978-458-6454 or email field@nikitsongas.com.
update: And here’s a video of my stop at the Tsongas campaign to volunteer today:

over CONTENT here ???? Why the incessant nit picking?
There seems to be no problem with “Idontknowski” spelling bashing here….that’s OK though?? The hypocrisy is unbelievable … geesh, show a little intellectual honesty to keep us normal people from getting sick, would you?
kbusch says
stomv says
1. Asking that one spell a proper name correctly isn’t semantics. It’s not nitpicking either methinks. It’s necessary both (a) to be courteous, and (b) to help with search engines and other content aggregators.
<
p>
2. The Idontknowski isn’t a misspell. It’s a parody. It’s a political cartoon. They’re not the same thing, not even close.
<
p>
It’s not hypocrisy. One is a misspelling, and only has negative value when compared with spelling the name correctly. The other is a political cartoon, and has positive value in and of itself [to counter the negative value of bad search aggregation]. It’s true that tags helps remove some of this problem, but certainly not all of it.
mrigney says
Toms impotence. I don’t understand why everyone makes such a big deal about spelling somebody’s name right. After all, somebody like Toms asmellylittlepissant barely has time to check his facts before racing off to gently correct yet another misguided librul – it’s really too much to ask him to check his spelling on top of that. I know he and I don’t often see eye to eye, but fair’s fair, and when I think Douchebags opinion is right, I think it’s only fair to admit it.

In a forum where the written word is the only thing by which you have to judge someones effort, sincerity and attitude, care with spelling, punctuation and grammar is the simplest and best way to be heard and to be taken seriously. The occasional typo can, and often will, be forgiven. However, when a mistake is posted numerous (13?) times it’s quite reasonable to assume the person (repeatedly) making the mistake hasn’t done the homework and may not deserve a serious listen.
<
p>
As has been pointed out ‘Idontknowski’ is a deliberate mispelling done so for humorous, slightly vicious, effect.

So assuming that winner is NIKI, doesnt status quo seem the obvious result? And doesnt our selecting her give our great big stamp of approval to the dem’s absolute contempt towards the idea of representing us, the ones who put them there? They represent themselves. They can thus have their own vote. Mine isnt that cheap.

That was pretty far flung.

What would I find for improvement, he asks? How about a firm grip on reality…? How about facing the truth? How about the willingness to confront facts? That this pustulent embolism we’ve spawned in Iraq is going to require the most delicate surgery to avoid death on an apocalyptic scale. I don’t think you realize what a global cluster-fuck of ginormous proportions this war is…
<

Inability to withdraw from Iraq isn’t a sign of Democratic weakness (no matter how much you wish it to be) but rather a sign of how incredibly bad the situation is… how well and truly George W has screwed that pooch.

You’re like the guy who drives his car into the flooding river and wonders why the fireman can’t pull him out instantly… Sheesh!
nomad943 says
That viewpoint was never espoused until AFTER the leading dem “anti war” candidates stated their “best case” scenerios.
Surprisingly a number of politicians (bi partison) have had alternative positions to the endless occupation theme now pushed by dem leadership (and BushCo).
Iraq will split into 3 provinces.
It will happen.
And much like Yugoslavia is no longer a thorn up our butt, so the new face of mesopotamia will find its place in the world …. but only AFTER we step aside and let nature take its course. All we do in the meantime is delay the inevitable.
You are aware that Iraqis vote almost weekly for us to leave immedietly, arent you?
bannedbythesentinel says
You support Kucinich. That's cool, but there is still too much corporate money infecting our electoral system to get a real populist elected (Edwards is as close as we might get), so rather than preaching purity from your high horse, why not explore methods we as regular citizens can use to mitigate our political reality as it is.
nomad943 says
Personal political persuasion as expressed through presidential preferences …. Aren’t the primaries great, in that at least there it’s fairly possible to find a candidate you feel good about supporting?
My take is that there are 3 people who have any credibility about this war issue. I do not view Edwards as being one of them because I can not digest his change of heart since being one of the loudest war drum beaters in the run up to shock and awe. You are either “anti war” or just “anti this war at this time” and I feel he falls in the latter category.
DK is fine with me, always has been.
Also Mike Gravel is a solid and he should get some kudos for where he stood during Vietnam, our last national disaster.
And lastly … there is Ron Paul.
So where to put that big one vote. Hmmmm …
You mentioned the corporate money angle so I don’t have to digress, since you seem to get it.
IMO to make a difference you have to do it through one of the 2 existing political machines and while one of them is well oiled and humming (witness Niki and the multi million dollar roll out), I feel the GOP machine is as close to broken as we may ever witness one of the Goliaths get.
In summary: At least Ron Paul has a solid shot of netting delegates so I will swallow the libertarian view which isn’t all that foreign to me and go with the candidate that wont just be easily silenced.
bannedbythesentinel says
I think it's quaint that you view the Dem machine as “well oiled” while the GOP machine is “broken down”. Where have you been for the last decade or three?
I also think it's quaint that your pendulum would settle on Ron Paul. Do you really think he has a chance in hades of getting the nom? The GOP is owned part and parcel by big money interests. What makes you think they'd allow Paul to get the nom?
Even if Paul did get the nom, you must realize that Paul is a nutcase. You don't value social security? Public schools? The FDA?
Guess not?
nomad943 says
I didnt say I thought he could get the nomination. I said he could/will get delegates. With deleagtes he gets to speak at a convention which is a whole lot better hand than the power brokers will deal the also rans at Hillary’s
coronation.
You cant form an actual protest if your leader doesnt get to speak; and speach is a necesary step to waking people up which is the logical first step.
And yes, I see the GOP as broken. Havent you noticed how many of their lifers are suddenly deciding that now would be a good time to retire.
Contrast that with the dems lining up to endorse the candidates that smeared them mercilessly only days before (remember Jamie?).
Which machine can be tilted at this time? Do the math. Do either of them actualy represent you now?

I think you'll be able to guess.

And how do you propose to get that one past the powers that be? I cant recall how many decades Ive heard that call. Didnt it start with the guy Anderson running in 1980? IRV makes perfect sense and it also flies right into the face of the duopoly that have a lock on power. Bet they will go along, huh?
bannedbythesentinel says
Do you still think that Ron Paul is a better option?
I think IRV has a much better chance at gaining traction.
nomad943 says
People can support any measure they want. Unless some hack in the state house moves it, they are nothing more than expressions of opinion on our part, a lot like a sense of the senate resolution accomplishes nothing.
The one idea I have heard thrown around that sounds interesting is the “call for a constitutional convention”, but again it would require sitting lawmakers in 37 states to follow the peoples will and not just ignore it.
petr says
<
p>
Don’t lecture me on Yugoslavia. I already know, from your own words, that I know much more about it than you… It may no longer be a thorn in your butt, but it’s still a problem… and was quite the problem for the whole world for much much longer than you would care to admit. Massive bloodshed. Rape as a terror tactic. Ethnic cleansing. You make it sound like a small hiccup on the way to Eden. You are so sadly mistaken.
<
p>
But Yugoslavia isn’t even close. At it’s worst, it’s still not as bad as Iraq is, and Iraq has the potential to get much much worse and much much wider. An even closer analogy is nuclear armed India and nuclear armed Pakistan still snarling at each other and on the brink of suicidal cataclysm 60 years after partition.

Check!
We will commit to pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending.
H.Res. 6, Title IV, “Adopting the Rules of the House of Representatives for the One Hundred Tenth Congress.” passed 280-152, Jan. 5th, 2007

We will make our nation safer by implementing the recommendations of the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission:
H.R. 1, “Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act of 2007.” passed 299-128, Jan. 9th, 2007

We will make our economy fairer, and start by raising the minimum wage. We will not pass a pay raise for Congress until there is an increase in the minimum wage.
H.R. 2, “Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007.” passed 315-116, Jan. 10th, 2007

We will promote stem cell research to offer real hope to the millions of American families who suffer from devastating diseases:
H.R. 3, “Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.” passed 253-174, Jan. 11th, 2007

We will make health care more affordable for all Americans, and we will begin by fixing the Medicare prescription drug program, putting seniors first by negotiating lower drug prices:
H.R. 4, “Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act.” passed 255-170, Jan. 12th, 2007
Check!
We will broaden college opportunity, and we will begin by cutting interest rates for student loans in half:
H.R. 5, “College Student Relief Act of 2007.” passed 356-71, Jan. 17th, 2007
Check!
We will energize America by achieving energy independence, and we will begin by rolling back the multi-billion dollar subsidies for Big Oil:
H.R. 6, “Creating Long-Term Energy Alternatives for the Nation Act.” passed 264-163, Jan. 18th, 2007

“Yeah, the GOP hasn’t had time to add a few billion of corporate welfare for big pharma like they did with the medicare drug bill.”
<

Do you have ANY idea what it costs to bring a new miracle drug to market? ANY idea of how many drug candidates actually make it through the 3 phases of FDA approval ( bet you have NO CLUE what they are and what the Process is) and how much that COSTS? Do you know that my country (USA) produces more new miracle drugs than the rest of the world COMBINED? Do you think that doesn’t cost anything? Should we call Santa Claus again to pick up the tab for this one too?

“Who paid for the war?”

The 3000 Americans killed in 9/11 and their families when our country was attacked in an act of war by islamo-fascist terrorists.

“Liberals are the ones looking out for the 99% of income earners that work for a living rather than sitting on their fat butts all day waiting for the dividend checks to arrive. That’s how it’s been since the Republican Great Depression.””

Sounds like a line right out of Karl Marx’s communist manifesto.. Who the hell do think owns all the stock in America’s major corporations? How about huge union 401 k pension funds to start with.. you probably own stock in them yourself ( assuming you’re not a full time communist on the public dole that actually works for a living which hasn’t been established here yet).
wow.. you’ve been listening to the communists way more than you should…why not get rid of your 401 K so some communist professor won’t be able to accuse YOU of sitting on your fat butt all day waiting for your dividend check? Seriously Banned… avoid Harvard Square and get a handle on reality. Hopefully ,you’ve got one but if not, get a job.

If your time was all that valuable you would write more substance and less… of what you write.
Here is the facts.

( full time student on Dada’s and Mater’s trust fund dime doesn’t count)
I had many years with Xerox, NEC Corp and Philips Electronics… guess what Banned?… you had to pay for a pretty good chunk of healthcare expense and even more as the years passed…so contrary to the popular socio- communist “big business capitalist swine” bullshit , it was pretty expensive there too.
bannedbythesentinel says
I refuse to make this about you personally or about me. Give that up. Debate on the merits of your argument or concede that you need to learn more.
Health care is becoming so expensive that it is driving down the standard of living for a demographic that was formerly known as the middle class. (far more so than the illegal aliens you seem to be so terrified of) That is why we need SCHIP expansion. It benefits more than just the small businessman.
bannedbythesentinel says
There is nothing of substance in this bit either:
So you like paying more to care for the uninsured because some of them are illegal?
Fascinating.

I cannot teach you economics. I believe there are plenty of good resources out there where you can learn the equivilant of Econ 101.
However, here is where I remind you that Bill Clinton left the US with a $230 BILLION BUDGET SURPLUS.

If these companies cannot be profitable on their own, they have no right being in business. I find it astounding how you froth over helping the poor yet you also froth at the prospect of reigning in billion dollar handouts for the ultra wealthy.
bannedbythesentinel says
I don't think there's anything of substance here.
I'm sure small businessmen may hold investments as well. Shouldn't they be allowed to save for retirement and also allow their children to get medical care?

You frequently go against the spirit, if not the letter of those rules.

My guess is that the reason you seem obsessed with the rules is that you want to know exactly how far you can go before you are booted (again?).

This is the annoying game that SZ and Tom are playing.
<

Frankly, if we want to read dissenting opinion, we have PP, Eabo, JoeTS, JK, and Gary who are all capable of dissenting in a civil, informed, factual, and readable fashion. One of the bad side-effects of the Tom/SZ game is that it actually squeezes out any space that the non-misanthropic conservatives have to express well-thought out dissent.
toms-opinion says
Fortunately , the principals here are infinitely more tollerent of dissent as long as it is not steeped in personal attack much like that that you and your self appointed censors have chosen to spew against me. You should consider yourself and your colleagues fortunate for not being reprimanded by the principals for YOUR violations of the posting rules. Your personal attacks are clearly documented here.
bannedbythesentinel says
You've abandoned an issue-centered debate with me downthread to mount a personal attack on KB? What gives? Can you defend your political positions or are you just going to go around calling everyone names?
Jeez, what's with you man?
kbusch says
I am only responding to what you say and do. What you say and do includes such gems as this. That would indicate less interest in discussing things here and more interest in some kind of turf battle set within the rules of the road.

Let me also point to this rant of yours:
It’s not untypical. You’ve written passionately and at length about what you regard as these soft, larval forms — both here and on RMG. You have what appears to be an extended set of negative opinions about college kids. Would it be possible that someone holding such views might wish to parody them as school zombies?
<

I wonder.

one of your delusional “aliases”. Present proof or STFU. Your paranoid delusions don’t count. And again, please obey the posting rules HERE as I do.
