Only Eight More Campaigning Days Until 4th Middlesex Senate Election

Vote for Jim Marzilli on Dec. 11 if you live in 4th Middlesex.  If you will not be able to make it to the polls, contact your town or city offices to get an absentee ballot.

Talk to or email your neighbors and friends to make sure they remember to vote.

  1. This vote is VERY important.  Because it is a special election, and the Democrats already came out for the primary, many folks may forget all about it.

  2. I got the following email today from supporters of Jim Marzilli’s opponent.  Will running in opposition to settled law get the republican any traction?

    Subject: What Voters Should Know!

    Please pay attention to this email.  [Marzilli’s opponent] NEEDS YOUR HELP.  If you believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, then you need to support [Marzilli’s opponent] in as many ways as you can.  Marzilli does not!

      • Interesting if special marriage rights for heterosexuals isn’t on his web page.  It is clearly being used as a rallying cry by his supporters.

        This week, we caught up with Cangiamila by phone and after a brief conversation couldn’t help but wonder is he’s been huddled in a tent on Mount Everest for the past four years. That’s the only plausible reason we can of think to explain why a current candidate for office didn’t seem to understand that same-sex couples can get married in Massachusetts. Asked if he supported that right, Cangiamila responded, “Well I think what it is, it’s more civil unions, though, it’s not using the word ‘marriage.'” Um, not quite. Cangiamila did express support** for the status quo, once we explained that same-sex couples could civilly marry in Massachusetts.

        And what does Cangiamila think of the prospect of reviving a citizen’s petition to amend the constitution to do away with marriage equality in the future? Cangiamila thinks any legislative interference with the citizen petition process, be it the tax rollback or an anti-gay marriage amendment, is wrong. “I just believe that they should be able to have that placed on the ballot. I don’t even know why the legislature’s involved in the process,” said Cangiamila, noting that in California citizens can put issues to voters without legislative approval. “At the end of the day I think voters will vote responsibly.”

        Let’s hope they vote responsibly in this special election.

        **UPDATE: Apparently, we gave Cangiamila a tad too much credit when we wrote he supports the status quo of marriage equality. The candidate released a statement soon after this column was published stating that while he supports hospital visitation, survivor benefits and tax benefits for same-sex couples and believes that “every person should be treated with respect and dignity,” he does not “support the status quo of same-sex marriage without voter approval.”
